Question Help with Cruise Control on an STI swap

Ok, so I searched and found no answer to my question.

I have a 2001 RS that has a 2004 STI engine & trans and ECU along with a JDM STI steering wheel, which means I have no cruise control. I have the RS steering column of course, and my horn works (not sure about air bag or not, but I have no warning lights)

I want to add cruise control but I don't know all the parts I will need. So far I figure:

1. USDM Steering wheel with cruise lever
2. Dash CRUISE button (hopefully I can use an RS button)
3. Cruise Control Module?
4. ???

What else do I need. The engine is drive by wire, so is it all controlled by the car's computer (or a cruise computer?) instead of throttle cables now?

Help me complete my parts lists please!

BUMP - maybe I just need the USDM steering wheels with the cruise stalk? Again, engine is drive by wire.

There is no cruise control module it is all built into the computer. There are just wires running from the computer to the switches. You just need to figure out which two wires on the STi harness turn the cruise on and wire the to the dash switch, then wire the other wires to the stalk.

Does the cruise stalk have the on/off button on it? (I thought I saw that it did)

If it does do I still need the dash button?

The 04 STi does have the on/off button on it. So if you used the STi cruise stock or the whole steering wheel you wouldn't need the dash button. I don't know if the 04 cruise stock will fit in your stock wheel though. I'm sure it can be done with some MacGyvering. It all depends on what you want to use and how you want to wire it up.

Gotcha. Well I have a JDM steering wheel on the car now, looks just like a USDM one, but with no cruise control. If the wires are there already maybe they mount the same way and all I need to do is trade

I have installed a cruise stalk in a V7 steering wheel that didn't have it factory. I made some little brackets to bolt on to the horn button where the stalk mounts. Then cut a hole in the plastic so it would fit. It worked well. It hasn't broken yet. If you already have the stalk this is a route you could take.

Alright, I got myself a USDM 04 STI steering wheel stalk.

How do I wire this thing up? Anyone have a schematic of what wires go to cc?

I've got the wheel off and I see 2 extra wires coming out of the same harness as the airbag, the cc stalk has 5 wires coming out of it and I know I need to find the dash button wires and make that connection somewhere.

Again, 2004 engine and steering wheel, 01RS dash.

*edit - I am searching and finding some things that help, but no definitive how-to with the combination of parts that I have. I am hoping that all the wires I need are already here. Because it is a swapped car maybe they cut all the old cc wires

Someone's gotta know

From the steering column, I have 3 wires: White with Red dots, Black with Red dots, and Green with Red dots.

From the cc stalk, I have red, white/red, yellow/black, green/black (x2, one has a ground connector on it), and black.

I've been looking at this thread but I need to find the dash button wires from my 2001. I don't have a cruise dash button, so it's hard to find what wires were supposed to go there.

Alright, I'm running wires right to the ECM, but I think I need 12v power now. If this works I'll make my own DIY

What is the best way to run a NEW wire up the steering column without it getting wrapped around something and being pulled apart?

Does your clock spring have enough pins in it?

The best way to run the wires is to unwrap the tape from the wires that go to the clock spring and use those wires. I'd probably just cut the wires that you need and extend them to the ECU. Then run the wires from the clutch and brake switches, etc.

Total there are 8 wires that need to be connected to the ECU to run the C/C. PM me your email and I will send you an 04 Impreza engine wiring diagram that includes what color wires for the C/C go to what pin in the ECU. I don't have the C/C diagram, I wish I did, I kind of need it now too.

Also if you need ECU pins or something let me know I have like 3 half torn apart harnesses laying around.

I'm thinking I don't have enough pins (5 total, 3 for cc 2 for airbag)

So far, what I've done is I ran the on/off, accel, and coast leads from the ecu to the harness that sends the 3 wires through the clockspring (I found them on the backside of the steering wheel column so I didn't have to cut anything), then I connected those 3 wires to the cruise lever.

That left me with 2 more leads, one of which I believe is looped to connect to the airbag for the horn.

Following this thread, I connected the red and green/black together and gave them a 12v source and drove the car. Cruise does not work. Also, if I touched that second gren/black lead to the metal frame of the wheel (as if pressing the horn) it'd blow a fuse and no horn sound. (is the horn switch + or - ?)

This is the thread I'm using for wire color ID on the cruise stalk.

When I was looking at the ECU pinouts, I did see 2 brake switch pins, one of which is not connected to anything. I didn't check for clutch switches yet.

You said 8 wires to the ECU, but that's including the dash lights right? Do I NEED those?

I put the car back together, done for today...

Ok well my 2 main options are keep the 04 CC but get a new clockspring (with more wires) or get 01 cc parts (dash button and old cc stalk) and cut a hole to mount the stalk.

Either way I'll still have to hook the clutch and brake switches (right?) and figure out what wires need to go where.

Does anyone know what the 3 wires that go to the 01 cc are? I assume 12v, accel, coast but I don't know which is which...

On a drive-by-wire car everything goes to the ECU. Looking at an 04 ECU pinout diagram I saw:

Brake Switch 1
Brake Switch 2
Clutch Switch
Indicator Light
Set Light
Main Switch (on/off)
Cruise Set/Coast
Cruise Resume/Accel

I ASSUME the dash lights aren't required, but the clutch and brake switches probably are, and the actual control inputs definitely are.

Getting wires to the ECU is easy, through the steering column not so much.

If a 2004 clock spring isn't plug and play on my 01RS, I'll have to use 2001 cruise parts (button and stalk)

DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE IF I CAN USE A 2004 STI CLOCK SPRING IN MY CAR?
