Default head gasket part numbers.

i'm doing headgaskets on my brothers 2001 2.5rs with the sohc 2.5.

i ordered a "full engine gasket set" from a vendor, supposed to be OEM. The brand is Stone (Ishino), supposedly oem supplier. i got the gasket/seal set in the mail, but i'm trying to figure out what headgaskets are in the kit, and if its the latest version.

the part number for the kit is 10105-AA860. looks like a subaru part number so it has to be OEM...but is it the updated kit? the vendor claims it is. but another thing thats got me questioning if its the latest kit, is that the cam seals are black. i could have sworn that the updated seals are supposed to be brown. the rear main seal and crank seal are brown though. i also checked online subaru catalogs, and it seems 10105-AA860 is still the right kit and not superseded.

everywhere i looked, the supposed updated headgasket part number is 11044-AA633. i'm curious if this update is only for the DOHC, or is it for the SOHC also.

however according to this thread at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/...d.php?t=108935 , 11044-AA633 is also a crap gasket. recommended to use 07+ STi headgasket, 3 layer metal, part number 11044AA670, which is also used in the ej253 non turbo motors.

on another note, i went to ask my local independant subaru mechanic. he also uses a 3 layer metal gasket. however it doesn't look OEM. the brand is "5star...something", and it looks like the 3 layers are riveted together and that these are the updated gaskets .

i apologize if my thoughts above are kinda jumbled. any help would be appreciated.

are those official part updated part numbers for the SOHC 2.5 non-turbo? or is it just improvised parts that will work better?

that is the 2.5 turbo gasket, excluding 07 and 08 sti, which are different.

the sohc gasket is 11044AA633. It has superceded 11044aa521, which I assume is a graphite gasket, and 11044aa630. I'm not sure what the difference is between it and 642 and if it is MLS.

if you go to opposedforces.com you can look up part numbers, although you will need to punch them into subarugenuineparts or something to get the up to date numbers. I have a spreadsheet with a bunch of useful ones.

well i tried what you said and i guess 11044AA633 is the most current headgasket for the non-turbo motors. its even listed for 08-09+ cars.

the full engine gasket kit, part number 10105AA860, also seems to be the most current kit, so i assume the head gasket included in the kit is also 11044AA633.

thanks. hope it works good.

10105AA860 full engine gasket kit does not have the updated 11044AA633 head gaskets!!!! it has the older 11044AA632. WTF WTF.

632 should be okay to use. I would avoid 521, as that is a graphite gasket. If yours looks like this:

then you're fine.

It's not really worth it to buy the full gasket kit as most of them will go un-used. for example, some of them come with 3 rear main seals ($20 ea), and you won't need any of the stuff to put the shortblock or heads together.

to just change the headgaskets, at the minimum you'll want to get:
headgaskets
valve cover gaskets, grommets, and half-moon seals
cam seals
intake manifold gaskets
exhaust manifold gaskets

you may or may not want to replace other stuff while you're in there. I spent $600 on parts to replace my headgaskets because I did the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and idlers while I had it apart.
