I currently have 98k on my tdo4 and am questioning the longivity of the turbo seals. The seals are not leaking as of yet, but am trying to stay ahead of the game. My buddy is offering me his 60k tdo4 but was told at the time of his vf39 install that his stocker had "a little shaft play". I am not familiar with "a little shaft play" or how much a td04 should have.
1. Is it possible for a turbo to never have shaft play? 2. Is it normal for turbos to have shaft play? 2. He is currently running/has been running RP 5-30. What impact does this have on cooling or lubrication of the turbo/seals. Yea..........he is offering it to me for $20.00 so i know bitching on my end should be 0, but i dont want a paper weight. Turbo was fully operational at the time of his vf39 swap. Looking to have grimm speed pnp it, or maybe a local who has experience.

i have 107k on the stock td-04. 35k at stage1, 5k at stage2. there was no shaft play when we checked it during the stg2 install.
we're not quite sure if its leaking oil. TMIC isn't soaked, but certainly has some in it. i lose a quart every 2-3k |

No turbo will have zero shaft play. A slight side to side shaft play is completely normal/fine.
Up and down shaft play is NOT normal, and the turbo is toast if there is. |
