Default check engine light, accessport, 08 WRX

Hey fellas,

I need a bit of help. I loaned my sister my car for a bit since I got arthroscopic surgery and need to drive an automatic with a lot of room to keep my leg straight. In return I got her 96 volvo.

Well she goes to school 3 hours away in charlottesville VA and said the check engine light just came on. I have an accessport and I want to have her run the codes on it to see what might be wrong. I don't know exactly how to do this as I haven't had to do it yet. The check engine light has never come on for me and of course given my luck it would come on when I am not even in possession of the car.

Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to run the codes using the access port so I can explain it to her over the phone? I told her to check the oil and coolant level first. Any other suggestions?
