Talking 2008 WRX Stage 1 Complete!

I finally made it to stage 1. Yeah, I know a lot of you guys are going "pffftt, seriously?" But I went through a lot with my car past few months so I'm pretty excited.

I bought it in June of 2009 (used, with 35K+ miles on it, just before warranty ended) in MA. I didn't do my research (first Subie) and ended up the car wasn't in perfect condition. Previous owner seemed to have gotten into an accident (my car is pearl white...the color of the front bumper is a little off). As soon as I get my car to my house (I live 4 hours away) the anti-skid lights go off and the roll feature (brakes) don't catch. I take to the dealer and it took them around 2 months to fix!!!!! Thankfully warranty covered it. I ended up getting extended gold also ......... (Now I really wonder if that was a good idea......) They had a mechanic from Japan fly in because they had no idea what it was. I still don't think I fully understand what it is. Something with a bunch of sensors going bad.

So I have fun with the car, not really ripping it for the next few months. Come January 2010, I hear a funny pop one day. I turn the car off then back on and my clutch pedal feels super funny. After driving for a few more miles I feel a considerable decrease in power and my clutch slips. I guess the previous owner rode the clutch like it was a second gas pedal. So I do a ton of research on how to get this fixed. One dealer close to me wanted $1600 for a new, stock clutch!!! A-holes. I went to AZPInstalls in NJ to see what they can do. They decided, before anything, bleed the clutch fluid. Then they find out that the bolts connecting the IC to the turbo is all f-ed up. So that night it went from clutch bleed to......save the turbo (AZPInstall guys are freaking awesome by the way.....) Eventually they said that I have to replace the clutch. After discussing with them, I was headed towards replacing to an Exedy Stage 1 clutch kit.

One friend suggested that I call SoA. So I called SoA and because it is a wear and tear item the extended warranty won't cover it. But out of goodwill, they will reimburse $450. I guess that's better than nothing? So I started selling a lot of my stuff to save up some money (among those items I had to sell my AEM CAI and stock grille) and changed everything to stock. Earlier this month I FINALLY went to NJ -- Liberty Subaru and they replaced it, including the flywheel. Clutch feels great. Eventually as I invest in my car and do more research I'll change the stock clutch........

Tuesday I ordered a COBB AP with a Perrin Stage 1 (93 OCT) map. Car feels awesome. I wish I did my research before. But hey....you learn from your mistakes!

How different is the bumper? The white on the plastics doesn't really match from the factory (Pearl and Aspen)

- Perrin Map is awesome. Car feels aggressive. However, I can't compare it to the COBB Stage 1 Map because I haven't done it yet. I'll let you know when I do a reflash.

- Thanks! Stage 2 is definitely on its way. I'm thinking about sticking with Perrin. Your take?

- Yeah.....it looks like the bumper is aspen white. But it doesn't stand out TOO much. It looks like it does this odd transition to aspen white towards the front of the car. But it's not AS bright as the stock aspen white. I'll get that done soon. I definitely did not notice it when I went to the dealer initially. I did a car wash few months later and saw it. A bummer but...not too worried.

Well my experience is with cobb off the shelf maps, and my protune....never used perrin so not sure i can really comment Although I have "heard" perrin maps tend to be tuned more aggresively than cobb which tends to tune more towards the reliability side...but I think either would be fine.

I've noticed this on several subaru colors. I believe I've read somewhere that the bumpers are painted in another factory (could be wrong).

Yeah I heard that too.................from Chris at Perrin as well as a bunch of others on here. I wish I knew a little more about the numbers to say something informative

From a body guy that I know... paint tends to be tough to match plastic to metal...

absolutely! I'm not a body guy, but it seems to be more obvious w/ lighter color cars. I have a silver car, my rear spoiler and hood scoop match nicely w/ each other but not w/ the metallic parts.

Glad to hear what ever happened to your car. The guys and I were curious about 2 weeks ago as to what the final result was. We finally got our lift in too! Hope to see you down our way for some mods and a BBQ this summer!

Regarding Perrin's stage 2 map: I have an Invidia turbo-back w/ Perrin's stage 2 map on my 09 WRX h/b and it's great! Such a rush when you gun it from a slow roll If you have any questions, let me know and I'll try and help you

Not a problem man. I know a bunch of folks who work at SOA, so I understand how you have to go to a dealer if they are going to pay for part of it. In these times, $ is short for everyone, so it's completely understandable. I'm just glad it worked out for you in the end.

That sucks that you got the screws put to you by the previous owner. Also You could have saved money and skipped the CAI as you wont need one until you replace the turbo. The Stock intake is more then enough for anything you might do on this engine with the stock turbo.
