Default What the **** did I do?

Maybe a few of you out there may be able to assist me. Saturday I installed my PDE uppipe, and if anything could go wrong it did. Chalk up two broken turbo flange bolts and a midpipe flange stud. That however is not my problem (these were easily fixed with a few studs and nuts). After the install and trying to figure out where my leftover heatshield had to go I put the stock uppipe and heatshiled with bolts in my trunk and went to the parking lot for a test drive. The "Snap" definately comes on early, but in my case it is accompanied by a very loud squeal!!!! I checked for leaks and could not find any. I did not screw with anything else and now I am extremely worried. If anyone could rack there brains and help me chase down the damn squeal I would Appreciate It.

Joe

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Did you check the right exhaust manifold going to the uppipe and the left side. You could also have a leak at the turbo where the uppipe comes up or where the downpipe connects to the turbo. Did you forget any gaskets? There should be five, turbo/downpipe, turbo/uppipe, uppipe/header, engine/header, header/crossover. I've reused some fo those gaskets without any problems. Are they in the right way. I know that the turbo/uppipe gasket can go on backward and not fit correctly.

On my drive home yesterday at 3 am I tried to do a little more checking. The squeal only happens a .8 (about 12 PSI) bar or higher other than that it is quiet as usual.

Did you check the gaskets?

Yeah....check for any extra parts...heatshields and heatshield bolts do not count.

Can you tell about where the sound is coming from?

Well good luck with it, and if the sound continues just turn up the radio.

Sonoma WRX,

Feel free to contact me directly, there are a couple of things that can happen during the installation that may well have helped cause your problem.
Send me an email, include your phone number, and I'll help you through the process.
It certainly sounds like you have a leak, it's most probably coming from between the lower up-pipe flange and the passengers side exhaust manifold. This can happen occaisionally if the two bolts on the lower flange have "galled" during the removal / installation process. It happens quite easily, as the stock bolts are stainless steel. Upon tightening, the nut can tighten up on the bolt, but because the thread is damaged, it does not compress the gasket fully. I've seen this happen a few times now, and we're about to begin supplying a bolt and nut kit for the lower flange in the box with the up-pipe.
The installation tightening sequence can also be critical to ensuring a perfect installation, as per the instructions.
Send me an email, and we'll get your problem solved.

Regards,

Ian Stewart.

Now that is customer service!!

A business that goes out of its way to look for customers that might need help and then make themselves available.

I got to say that is pretty damn impressive, and I gotta give a thumbs up to PDE.

Hope you can Joe out with his problem, since he lives all the way up in BFE, we cannot help him much.

Later....Kris

I gotta give them props too. That's cool. Not many vendors do username searches. They should all start doing that.

Default Correction to my mental diarhea (sp?)

For some reason when I originally posted I thought I had a PDE uppipe, what I actually have is an ATR uppipe (I had to do a search to find this out). How I brain farted, I don't know. It must be the darn Fairbanks 5 minute weather pattern. Even though I confused his product with another, Ian from PDE has offered any info he could just to help out. This says volumes for PDE's character and customer support.
