Default garage door opened by itself, paranoia setting in

So early this morning about 4am, my garage door opener went off.

Prior to going to bed yesterday I was with my friend in my garage and we were painting a bumper, trunk, and some other parts and disengaged the garage door chain lock. This way we could move the door by hand up or down and by any amount we wanted. We finish and pack up and this morning at 4am I hear the garage door go off. My fiance does too so we both sit up in bed and the dog (who sleeps in his cage each night next to our bed) stands up and starts wagging. I can only imagine hes wagging because he associates the garage with either my fiance or myself coming home. Normally he's an insane watchdog and sounds vicious. So I rush downstairs to check on the parts hanging as they were still drying, and everything is fine. Then Im curious as to why it happened so while Im in the garage I peer out to check her car as its her side of the garage the door was triggered on. Nothing...

Im going to check the battery in her opener today and make sure its not corroded and setting the door off. Otherwise its pretty strange... I've googled a bit about garage doors opening on their own and it does seem to happen. Then of course someone at work mentions that maybe it was someone testing frequencies to see which garage doors they are able to open. Kind of like an attempt to pre-determine a house to come back later to and steal something.

Im not sure if I can change the frequency of the opener by adjusting the dipswitches on the remote and opener, but if thats possible, Im going to try that tonight. Maybe the locks too.

What does OT think? Am I freaking nuts?

edit: after I checked the garage, I went into every room and closet in the house.

nope, there are thieves who do that. You would think they would at least close the door so not to alert the owner though...

Reset the code on the garage door opener, re-program remotes, make sure no shady cars are around when you're doing this.

Garage door openers usually work in military frequency bands. So usually military equipment triggers garage doors. its actually quite common. Here is one story, there are way more if you google it.

Ding. We had this problem when we were living close to a military base.

Im going to see if they lock. I really had no idea they could be fastened. I know there's a serial rapist about two doors down. He's allowed to go to work now but still has a bracelet which police I believe can monitor him with. I've lost family in a pretty horrific fashion in the past, so Im a little nuts, but my fiance was scared by it too. If it was just me I'd write it off, but I'm just wondering if this is something which is common and experienced by a great number of people?

I personally have never heard of this but my google search showed quite a bit of people experiencing frequent issues of doors opening. This has NEVER happened to us. Home Depot and new deadbolt tonight.

I had that happen twice when we first bought our house. We hadn't moved in yet and were just painting, it is quite startling to show up at the house in the morning to find the garage wide open.

At first, I thought something was up with the previous owners. Then one day when I shut the door in to the house, the garage door opened up. It turns out there was a short in the button in the garage and any vibration caused the garage to open or close.

It is highly unlikely it was a code breaker if your garage door opener is decent and made in the last 10 years or so, because it should have rolling-code security in it. It's not a trivial process to break rolling-code security. If your opener is the old school set dip switches in the opener and remote, then it is likely someone haxx0rd your codez. Your cheap ass should be replacing your opener with a newer one ASAP if that is the case.

I stupidly went to bed last night and left my garage door open. Luckily any good stuff is hidden by junk due to renovations

My money is on this being the problem. Do you live near any military installations?

Again, if his garage door opener has rolling-code security it is highly unlikely a person that is purposely trying to break the security is going to be able to. Stray interference from something on the same frequency causing it to open is astronomically more unlikely than that even.

You don't need to be paranoid until this starts happening!

This happened a week ago. Off the hook! Is was a true WTF/Thank-You-God moment!

I mean, who there among us has not had this dream pretty much every night? Except in the dream you substitute running out the front door with peeling off all her clothes and jumping in.

I used to live near an air force base and my garage door would open all the time. Drove me nuts. Eventually I put a timer on the outlet so that it could only be operated between 8:15 am and 8:45 am (when I went to work) and 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm (when we were home, or going in and out). Any time after that I just parked outside, or went in and flipped the switch on the timer to allow me to turn it on.

A little hassle, but I had to do that after coming home no less than 10 times to a wide open door.

Code changes ... dey do nothing!
