You can do tons with the EJ22. It is one of the best engine Subaru have ever made.

What is your goal? HP gain? handling?

+1 for one of the best blocks in a suby, you can do all kinds of stuff with these engines ive seen a built one with a vf39 put down about 320 hp and tq (a little conservative too because it was a dd). the only problem with these blocks is that you have to watch the compression if you run wrx heads it lowers the compression alot but you can do all kinds of stuff to get the CR the way you want it. what are your goals for the car?

I think you guys might be a little confused. OP, you are talking about the NON turbo 22 correct, out of a base model impreza....NOT the 22t out of the legacy. THAT motor is the one to build, not the base model 22. The 22t has a closed deck unlike the base 22. As far as your base 22 goes you could always do some PnP, phenolic spacers, good maint. and an exhaust...but you might want to simply throw in a 2.5 out of a legacy or rs.

In 18 months I intend to attach 20G heads to a 22E, bolt on a TD05H and have fun with the factory JDM Legacy turbo ECU.

So the complete opposite of what you have suggested.
