Mercedes-Benz announces new electric engines

Berlin, Germany – Mercedes-Benz will produce a new generation of transmission-integrated electric engines for its hybrid vehicles at its plant in Berlin, starting in 2012.

“The electrification of the drive system will play an important part in mobility in the future,” said Volker Stauch, head of powertrain production. “The Berlin plant already has a wealth of expertise in the manufacture of electrically-controlled components. Through this decision, the site will play an even more important part in shaping the future drive systems portfolio of Mercedes-Benz.”

As part of the strategy, Daimler has also taken on a leading role in the development and production of battery cells, and the future manufacture of lithium-ion battery systems in two joint ventures with Evonik Industries AG.

A 4,000-square-metre plant is currently being converted at the Berlin plant for the new production, and the company will invest approximately €40 million in development and production of the new engine.
