No airbag - just my 07 one. I'll keep looking on the classifieds here.

The 07 airbag won't work with the 08+ controls. You will have to try and find the older Legacy steering wheel with controls. They are not as nice as the 08+ though.

OH, OK - I see what you are saying. You are suggesting I use an older Legacy wheel, with its associated cruise and stereo controls, with my airbag?

I suppose that would be cheaper, and keep the original look.

What I was thinking was to go all-out and get the 08+ airbag, wheel and controls. Whichever, really.

Suggestions for the Legacy wheel and controls as to where to get them?? I suppose that'll be tougher to find...probably best to get an aftermarket Legacy wheel, and the controls from the dealer...?

EDIT : After looking at a few pics of the Legacy controls, I agree - I'd most likely go 08+ for the whole setup. =) Seems to me there's more controls too.

As an aside, do I NEED STi controls if going all 08+, or will the controls off of any 08+ Impreza do?

Actually you can still use a DAMD wheel if you want. You just need to order the one for the Legacy/GD Impreza. Then you could use your airbag and the controls from a legacy wheel.

Not sure the best place to get the legacy controls, but I would imagine the same avenues as the 08+ wheel controls.

Well, if I'm going to be paying 600+ bucks for a steering wheel, I'll want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck. =) I just had a look at the Legacy controls, and they seem fairly limited : a "+" and a "-" on each side...? Much rather have the more complete 08+ ones, as depicted in this tutorial. I don't mind swapping my airbags over - besides, as I understand it, I've already got a dual-charge system, so the 08+ ones will simply plug in.

Have I got this right?

Cheers!

Yeah, thats what I'd do if I were you. The 08+ is so much nicer, and yes the 08+ airbag should plug right into your 07.

So Dave,

Say I wanted to gather parts for this project, with the aim of basically having the car down for as little as possible. Questions, then :

1. I assume that I could just get any 02-07 Impreza cruise control stalk (for the green plug)?
2. I also assume that I could get any 08+ Impreza steering wheel controls?

This way, I could solder everything up in advance, and then it's just a matter of taking one wheel off, putting another one in?

(Of course, I'd have to get the actual wheel and airbag at some point!)

Thanks!

Well you don't HAVE to buy another stalk for the green plug. If you want, you can always remove your cruise stalk and drive around with out cruise controls while you do the modifications.

Yes any of the 08+ impreza controls would work. It does not have to be from an sti wheel.

Just remember there is still quite a bit of work once you have the switches modified. It wont be "just a matter of taking one wheel off, putting another one in". You still have to modify the wiring on the back side of the clock spring for your audio controls, hook up the PAC controller, wire to your after market radio, etc.

If you get stuck, just let me know. I am more than happy to help you out.

So after reading all of this let me see if I understand and someone can point me in the right direction..

I have a 05' STi. It's a single stage airbag.

I want to get the GD model of the Damd steering wheel. I would like the 08' steering controls HOWEVER.

I would have to get the newer Damd steering wheel, buy the controls off an 08' impreza. Wire them up (which is no issue to me at all) AND purchase the 08' air bag but use the single stage ignitor and attach it to the airbag?

Do I have that right?
If I have that right, then it appears that it will be well over 1g just to do the above...? If that's right then I guess I will just stick wtih the GD model of the Damd steering wheel.

But again, I am just asking outloud to make sure I understand from reading all these pages..lol

You have it correct! Unfortunately its not a cheap endeavor, but what it boils down to is how much are you willing to pay to have steering wheel audio controls. The GD wheel is more then the GR wheel, so really you are only paying an extra 200-300 to go the GR route. Also, the GR wheels are easier to find used which will help offset the cost even more. (I actually know a guy who wants to sell his). The only other downside to the GR route is finding the 08+ airbag. They are harder to come by.

So basically you just need to decide whether or not its worth it for the audio controls.

I have an 04 wagon, would I have to get an 05 wheel (tri spoke design) and the 08+ control modules? then go through the process as stated?

I already have an aftermarket radio, and have been looking for a way to add steering wheel controls. This is by far the best method I have seen.

no, you would have to get an 08 wheel. the control buttons will not fit with an 05 wheel.

ok. i missunderstood and thought you were swapping the 08 center section onto the 05 wheel portion.

so if I can source an entire 08 wheel, I'll be good for my 04.

Ok so I just installed my 08 steering wheel into my 06 STI, followed this tutorial, which first of all, THANK YOU to xxscaxx, this tutorial helped a lot.

I noticed in the tutorial, you mentioned that the 05 airbag charge only had one connector, my 06 airbag has two connectors just like the 08. They are different charges though, the position of the colored connectors are opposite. This would make them compatible though, correct? I swapped mine just to be safe, but it probably was not necessary to swap them. What do you guys think?

Anyways, the wheel is switched and everything works great, absolutely LOVE the GR wheel.

Here is a pic showing the airbags.

I went the Legacy Spec B audio controls route in my WRX. It was cheeper than the GR route(I got a Legacy 5EAT steering wheel with sport shift buttons from a junkyard for $75 and bought the Spec B buttons for $80 from subaru Genuine Parts, and got to reuse the stock airbag) that and I like what the 05 WRX wheel looks like

I also did a write up on how I did it found here:
Write up: Legacy Spec B steering wheel audio controls install into a 2005 WRX

I have some pictures of soldering the wires to the clock spring which may be of some help to people installing either the GR wheel or the Spec B wheel.

Do you not have to swap the charge for the air bag if you do this?

If not i wonder if the airbag cover different. I wonder if i could keep my SAAB logo on my wheel?

If you use the 07 Legacy Spec B wheel you would not have to change the airbag at all, hence keeping your Saab logo airbag. if you are trying to use the 08+ sti/wrx wheel then you will need to swap the airbag too.

Sweet! The airbag change swap was the thing holding me back, just wasn't 100% on it.

Now that I know I can keep my airbag and SAAB logo I definitely want to do it!

Yes, that is because like the GR, you have a dual stage airbag, while mine (05) is single. I would assume they are compatible, but like you wouldn't want to take a chance and find out

Glad this thread helped you.

I did the Spec B wheel and audio controls in my Saab about a month ago. It looks nice with the Saab airbag. I'll post pics of it when I get a chance.
