Angry Whats this crap I got in the mail (recall) SOA!!!

I got a letter in the mail today from the SOA that said (to sum it up!!)

"Subaru of America has determined that the Engine Control Module on your Subaru will need to be reprogramed. The On-Board Diagnostic System and the Engine Control Module software logic for the circuit that controls the front oxygen (air/fuel ratio) sensor in your vehicle may have been programmed incorrectly during production."

What is up with this crap? Did anyone else get this letter? What if you have the tec-II chip installed?

Back of the hand slap!!!

Kurt

do you mean the TC2 (torque chip 2)? tec-II isn't a chip, it's a seperate engine management system. If you're running a tec-II then you don't need your ECU reprogrammed since it's not taking care of fuel and timing.

I had mine done a couple thousand miles ago... Before the notice came out. Mine was one of the few, the proud, that got stuck on.

Three days in a Buick Regal! Ack!

Now we can reflash the ECU at the dealership, saving everyone the hassle of loaner/rental cars. The reflash generally helps optimize conditions and eliminate many of the dreaded CEL's.

Hmmm.... so the ECU can be flashed? What kind of modifications can you make? Can you make changes to the timing or fuel curves? It sounds like if the ECU can be flashed, then some one should be able to figure out how to reprogram the ECU similar to the Hondata or Zdyne stuff done for Hondas, just without chip replacement.

Wishing, dreaming, I know.......

At this time we can only reflash with the update program Subaru has given us. Although, you may want to look into ECUTek in Austrailia. I've heard they can reprogram factory ECU's for performance mods.

I was just pretty damn frustrated that I had to leave my car that long, anyway... Is the ECU /that/ closely married to the car that you couldn't just do a parts swap? Why the hell couldn't they order a pre-programmed ECU, ship it out, swap with mine, and send mine back as a core?

I mean... jeeze. Keeping me away from my car that long is just cruel...

Do a search for the subject "Yoshio". He's a tuner in Toronto, Canada
that is doing exactly what you are asking. He's setup now to do WRXs
and shortly for 2.5s. You can also check out the Torornto Club

mofoporn-bring it up to the dealership and i'll reflash it myself if you'd like. It should only take aboout 15 minutes (giive or take).

Hey SubeTek-

Couple of questions that you can hopefully answer. My biggest one is is this reflash really necessary? Is it just to relax the emissions tests on it for codes like 0420 catalyst inefficiency or do you think it also changes the timing-fuel curves at all too?

I am just curious becuase the car is Cobb dyno tuned right now and I donąt want to mess up the state of tune its in. I do get the occasional 0420 code but that is only becuase I am running one high flow cat vs. the 3 factory cats... so I am thinking even if I do this it still wont eliminate the CEL problem. PLUS I also have a OBDIi scanner so I can clear them as soon as I get them

Thanks.

Dave-I'm not sure if it effects fuel/timing curves, although i have heard of people getting better driveability after the reflash. I think it has to do with how the system samples itself for CEL's mostly. I doubt it would have any effect on the state of tune on your vehicle, but i can't guarantee anything. PM me if you'd like my home # to discuss this more.

This reflash was not for 2002 WRX, correct?

Some WRX's are included in the recall. They usually send the letters out in stages so as not to kill us with everyone wanting to come in at the same time.

If I don't get a letter should I assume that a reflash isn't necessary for my car. Or should I contact my dealership to find out. Thanks for your info

You can try your dealer for a VIN inquiry-that will tell if there are any open recalls. I'd wait a couple of weeks to see if the letter arrives first. Sometimes it takes a little while for Subaru to update the system. Let me know if i can help with anything else.

I don't think it will effect performance that much, but it should make it more tolerant of mods. Mostly should help with less CEL's.
