Travis Pastrana Big Jump Thread

Just catching up after surviving yet another New Year's. Hope everyone had a safe holiday. If the first week is any indicator, it's going to be an amazing year for Subaru, Rally and, well, everyone.

Travis Pastrana started the New Year by marginalizing Ken Block's Stunt Junkies 170ft jump from just a few years back. Pastrana rocked his STI 269-feet over water and into the record books. The way these guys work it was only a matter of time before Block one-upped Pastrana. Nobody thought Block's jump would be a business one -- to Ford.

Whether or not you like the idea, Ken Block's move to Ford is the best thing that could happen to rally in the USA. We've been covering the sport since 2003 and every year was going to be "The Year" that Rally takes off in America. Well, 2010 is finally that year. (Just too bad for Subaru that it involved one of their stars defecting.) Sucks for Subaru fans that the next Gymkhana video will be Ken rockin' a Ford Fiesta. (Yes, that's confirmed.)

On a side note: Ken's deal with Ford is a multi-year program. The goal is to get Block into the upper rungs of WRC competition. That was something Subaru simply could not offer at this time -- since they have no WRC program.

Default Block and Ford

We are also wondering why Block decided to sign to Ford. After his success with the Gymkhana Subaru videos and all of the merchandise that they had just released with the Subaru/Block logo's on it... Hmm Check it out at http://www.wxnonline.com we will be bringing you all the news on this developing story....

Maybe because Subaru pulled out of WRC which kind of caps the level he can reach. Solsberg made the jump too.

I'd say it's super lame after Subaru spent money on him to leave, but he also got a lot of people interested in Subaru as well

We still have Mads Østberg's Impreza WRC entry (which is actually doing fairly decently as far as I've seen) keeping Subaru WRC-active until Subaru as a company make a come back

I feel like Ken is now suddenly limited by Ford. Could DC Mountain Lab ever have happened with a Ford? If so, I wouldn't have watched it.

i really don't like the fact that he's leaving subaru but it's a great time to do it. now that he has caught the eye of most everyone with his videos and stunts he can now make the transition into the WRC and have a stronger following. maybe he could make it "the year of rally" here in the states. hopefully they start airing on speed again. or HDTV theater just like this past year. it'll make a hell of a fight for mikko hirvonnen and sebastien loeb. no worries though - the subaru family still has travis pastrana!

It may boost the sales of American cars and possibly release the Ford Focus RS.

Ken Block already couldn't keep pace with Pastrana in Rally America . . . this will only hurt his chances.

I wrote this in another thread before it got locked, but here goes:
give block a break. subaru pulled out of WRC and the guy likes to drive rally. what other options did he have? subaru obviously wasn't one, so why not go to another successful rally team that's still racing?

what I'm getting at here, is that I don't think this is entirely ken block's fault.

and in all honesty, I think the ford focus rally car is pretty awesome! I wish block good luck in his racing and future endeavors. it's a shame I never saw his subaru in person I wonder if I'll have any more opportunities? I wouldn't mind seeing the ford focus rally car either though, of course.

I've got to say I was pretty impressed with his gymkhana videos when they first came out. I don't worship him, or despise him. It's not like he did something personal to me, most people just hate him because he's popular and a rice magnet. This was a good move by ford.

When Latvala crashed in FRONT of the Ford bosses with 2 turns left in an event, you have to know the bosses were thinking, "who can we replace this guy with?!" As for Mikko, Ken isn't at that level (yet?)

lol yes very true lol i remember that stage. all he had to do was finish. yes, mikko is amazing i just haven't watched ken actually rally so i'm not sure what level ken is on - so it's hard for me to compare the two. i know mikko is great though. hopefully ken block can finally bring the rally craze to america!

good for him, as they say competition improves the breed. If successful this gives ford reason to bring over the rs and maybe a hotrod fiesta. Then other manufacturers (renault/renaultsport) will have to follow suit with hot hatches (megane r26.r) and we can get in on small car fun. Long shot, but i can hope can't i?

Hey just to have you think about this he WILL BE the first american to compete in a full season of WRC. Pastrana did a few races here and there but no one has yet particpated in a full season. I am intrested in seeing how he does because it will be a good litmus test on how the racing in the states compares to the rest.
