Default Which one of you monkeys is this?

Dear Dr. Gridlock:

I think we have a relatively new class of self-centered Washington-area driver: Those who purposely block those behind them by driving slower.

I had an episode in Lake Ridge a month or so ago, when the driver in front of me apparently felt I was following too closely -- yes, good Lord, I was two to three car lengths away! -- so he slowed down to about 25 mph, although this was a 45 mph zone.

It wasn't long before I noticed several cars stacking up behind me, all because this self-appointed road marshal decided to "teach me a lesson." Well, guess what? I passed this driver at the first opportunity, and that caused him to speed after me.

Too bad he was in a family-type "grocery getter" and I was in my Subaru Impreza WRX! See ya!

My personal pet peeve is the missing man formation where they stagger just off someone's bumper so that you can't get between them and they refuse to complete the pass or to back off. You can flash your lights, beep the horn, nothing will motivate them to move, they just look up in the mirror and then gaze back down at the floorboard.

Its funny, once you get in an accident in which you are rear-ended you notice how you don't tail-gate as much as you used to, if any...

After my accident I have left alot more space between the Drvier in front of me and Myself. I now personnaly hate tail-gaters, but I try as hard as I can to let them go by me... not block them off, cause that means they get alot more enraged, and follow alot closer....

Its an un-inforced Maryland Law that if you are in the fast last going whatever speed and someone speeds of behind you going a faster speed you are obligated by law to get out of that lane. At least thats what they told us in drivers ed 8 years ago.

Ya i hate tail-gaters! Having a car held together by bumper stickers...people like to get as close as they can to my bumper and read all of them. They dont care that all of the stickers they cant read or things they would have no knowledge on, more or less bands and whatnot, but they still insist on doing it. I have had a couple people hit me barely and didnt do any damage and I have had almost 10 more accidents b/c people are folllowing close to my car and they do not pay attention to anything. bah! The moral is....dont put stickers on your car!

That is also a newly enacted VA law.

Um...this law has been around for a long time. The left lane is for passing only. The law is at least 5 years old, since I first learned it in Driver's Ed in high school.

You know what really bugs me...the people that hang out in the left lane, as they pass the signs that say "Slower traffic keep right" They know that I'm going faster thanthey are, and they still do it. The worst is when you pass them and they flash their lights at you, because you are going faster than they are.

"The worst is when you pass them and they flash their lights at you, because you are going faster than they are."

Yes, you can extend them every courtesy, not tailgate, give them pleanty of room before you come back over and then BAM they throw the lights on Highbeam and leave them there. This happened to me like twice last month. The last time, I just pulled back out, burried the brake pedal and let him shoot by, and then got behind him and high beamed his ass till he slowed to about 20mph. After I came around him I took off. I *think* he tried to give chase but it was hard to tell with him left so far behind.

I really can't stand it when you are cruising along in the left lane passing the normally slow traffic on the right then out of no where some bum cuts you off as he merges into the left lane. As if not waiting until you pass to gain speed and merge, after they have cut you off they want to drive about 3-5mph faster then what the tortouses in the slow lane are going. Whats up with that. Of course when traffic is clear on the right hand lane they don't want to get over and out of your way forcing you to pass on the right. By the way I'm not talking about me doing 80 in a 65 and someone pulls out and wants to do 65. I'm talking about cruising at 65 and someone pulls cuts you off and doesn't exceed 58. My newly installed airhorns seem to remedy this problem a little more effectively then the stockers

I think you have something there. On a populated road the trick is to leave enough just enough space that people won't jump in or else you will be in a continual state of decelleration.

It seems to me that the right lane carries some kind of stigma for most drivers these days. Like it's "not cool" to drive there. I often see situations where the left 2 lanes out of 3 are packed tight with people driving the limit or 5 over, and the right lane is totally clear. I usually won't pass on the right, but in a situation like that, screw it.

I have to fight against the high-beam urge a lot. But I guess if they're too inconsiderate to choose the correct lane, they won't respond to harassment either.

i currently live in the norfolk area, where we have some of the worst drivers in the country (but not as bad as DC!). one funny thing i notice here is that very often, especially on I-64 and 264, the further over to the right you go, the faster you can drive. it's the reverse of how it should be. if you want to pass everyone just get in the far right lane, the slowest drivers are in the left lanes. this happens a lot here!

Post New Law

I have enacted a new law, because the left lane is always packed with slow people, the right lane is now the fast lane. You should check it out sometime on the highway.
