Default a question for those of you with knowledge on transmission swaps.

ok i drive an 02 wrx, and the sti trans isnt in the cards for me anymore as i have a kid on the way. so im doing a budget build. ive noticed the older sti transmissions are good to a little over 400whp. so heres my question. can i swap a sti 5 speed into an 02 wrx?
what exactly do i need to do the swap and keep the r180 (pretty sure they had an r180) or what do i need to use the 5 speed with an r180?
any information provided will be greatly appreciated.

You need to read the sticky threads and hit the search feature HARD. They will not hold 400WHP.

I have a friend that has been running 400 whp on one for a few years. It has alot to deal with how you treat it. If you guys really disagree whats the cheapest i can get a six speed and the r 180?
And i tried searching i still have no clue what i need to swap it. Alot of six speed info, not too much 5

Choose which GC8 STi tranny you want. Then the R180 with the correct final drive.

You can swap the tranny in, and just fine an R160 with the right final drive. You can upgrade the diff in it to a LSD and it'll hold. If you choose to use the older LSD diffs, you need to run their axles. It's much easier to upgrade the newer WRX diffs or even an Impreza L rear diff to an LSD one and use your WRX axles.

This just involves a tranny swap and rear diff swap to the right final drive.
