Default 2006-07 Impreza questions

I have a few questions I've been researching for a while. I'm just getting into the Subaru game and want to do some more research before I pick up my first one.

I'm looking at getting either an 06-07 Impreza or if I should get the WRX. If I get the Impreza I'm gonna want to turbo it sometime down the road so I can keep up with my friends . I can't find out if it's possible to turbo an Impreza though. I saw the AVO turbo kit for all Impreza's but it was only for 00-04 Impreza's. It also said you can put it on other models with some work. Has anybody turboed an Impreza? Or would it be smarter to pay the money for the WRX since I see they have so many more upgrades than Impreza's.

Also, I understand some parts from WRX's can also work on Impreza's but exactly what works?

My main concern on purchasing a Subaru is if I'll be able work on it and put a lot of parts I want on it. Is the Impreza a good choice or would the WRX be better?

Buy the WRX. If you have to ask these questions about adding a turbo to an NA car, you won't be able to turbo it successfully. It's not worth it anyway.

Don't worry about if I'll be able to do it successfully. I just need to know if it's possible to put a turbo on a 2.5i. I also would like to know if anybody has done it successfully and how it worked out for them. The way I look at it is if I get a WRX I'm going to be changing some of the stuff about it that makes it a WRX. So why get a WRX if I'm going to be changing things on it when I could just get an Impreza and do what I wanted in the first place without wasting money.

You should be fine. If I have my facts right, the 2.5 impreza is the same as the WRX, just has no turbo.

you're kidding, right?

this has to be some joke or sarcasm cause there's no way you are serious. if you are, i think it's time you go on over to the newb and faqs forums for a while.

Lmao you're facts are not right at all. There is a huge difference from the 2.5i and the wrx. I don't even know if it's worth my time to even post in this thread. But from one Subaru owner to another I will try and help you.

It is possible to turbo any n/a car with some money and some good ol' genuine knowledge of what you're doing. If you want an 06-07 2.5i n/a and are determined on turboing it then I would wait for avo to release the turbo kit for our body style. The reason the avo kit being sold now is only up to 2004 is bc starting in 2005 Subaru started using the drive-by-wire system. Trying to get the kit made for the up to 2004 fit on a 2005 or newer is just going to be a money pit. Just take this advise to heart, if you really want a turbo'd suby just save yourself the hassle and buy the wrx!

i would begin with a wrx if you are looking to mod ur car and could becheaper in the long run .....

and about engines on wrx and 2.5i.... there is a big difference.... and the main one is the compression ratio of the block .... just to make it easier.... if u add a turbo that is more than 6psi on a 2.5i, u need to rebuild ur engine pretty soon after that .... because the engine is not gonna hold that power .... while on the other hand, if you get a wrx it comes with a 13psi turbo and u can upgrade that.... but still need to watch the limit and not break ur engine....

but if u want to buy an impreza and do a swap and like to work on doing the swap urself that might be cheaper assuming u can get good deals on parts!

go big or go home =P
jk jk
i say get a wrx...if lets say your stock exhaust manifold crack on the naturally aspirated impreza, its going to be expensive and a pain in the ass to find headers for it ( the only reason i say is that i have a 2007 2.5i and the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds started leaking by the flex pipes)

where as if you get the wrx, there are headers everywhere...

Sorry it's been a while since I've heard that. Sadly, it's not true. It would be pretty damn awesome if it were true, then all us NA owners would be bolting on used TD04's and swapping hoods with WRX owners like nobody's business.

probably suspension parts due to the sheer $$$ and time needed to even do a 2.5L N/A to turbo conversion? since you cant just bolt on the turbo/TMIC and go.

to the OP, if you want the fun of the turbo'd imprezas, save up and get a WRX (+1 for the 06 since they have aluminum lower A-arms where the 07's do not).
For the price of getting a used 2.5i and dumping all the money+time into it to turbo it (reliably), you might as well just buy a used 06-07 wrx at that point and save yourself the time/potential (inevitable?) reliability headaches.

Im fairly sure suspension does, and brakes you would need to do the whole thing (rotors, calipers, pads...) and you may need more offset wheels to clear them

this. suspension bits like swaybars, endlinks, springs, you can do. but brakes you cant since the 2.5i's dont have the upgraded 4/2 pot setup. 2.5i's also have 16" wheels were wrx's have 17"

I think the general rule is this: If you want to eventually have a turbo on your Subaru, you are better off getting a Subaru that comes from the factory with with a turbo.

Can you bolt-on? Sure, but if you are looking at $2500 for the bolt-on kit, add in time and labor, and you might as well have just spent a little more and bought a WRX.

If you turbo your car and blow the engine, then you will spend a whole lot more money that you would have spent if you just bought the WRX to begin with.

Thanks for all the info guys. The thing is, I'd get a WRX over a 2.5i any day. But when it comes down to being $5000 more than a 2.5i and I don't have much choices there's not much I can do.

What I really need to know are all the upgrade options that are available. I know everyone says "if you want to upgrade, the 2.5i is not for you" but even with this knowledge, I want to know what I could be limited to.

Do coilovers made for a WRX work for a 2.5i? What parts on the WRX/STi can I swap over to a 2.5i? In short, what exactly can I do to make my 2.5i faster/better?
