Default 04/05 guys; anyone running PIAA fogs light in there JDM fog housings?

I'm getting a pair of JDM fog bezels, but just the bezels not the lights. After some searching I discovered you can use PIAA 540 or 580 and they will fit in the JDM housings.

Is anyone doing this? Can you please share pics and describe how good the fitment is? Which lights did you use the 540? or the 580? If you used the 580 which are 85W were you still able to use the stock wiring? Which beam pattern did you go with fog or driving lamp, and how is the output and spread of each. Does the driving lamp pattern shine low enough so not to blind on coming drivers? How much extra illumination does the fog pattern give?

Sorry, a lot of questions at once, but answers to any of them much appreciated.

UPDATE!!! Go to post #31 to see my solution

I am getting ready to buy some 540's for my JDM bezels. I thought it was the 520's and 540's that fit? How big are the 580's?

Maybe I'm wrong about the 580s, I think you're right it's the 520s or the 540, and the 540 are the 85w ones. My mistake.

But please post some pics after you get them in, and let me know how the fitment is. I'm also wondering if the PIAA rock guards (the ones that are a black grid that say piaa in white) will still fit on inside the JDM housing. I've got an idea to paint those WRB and paint the PIAA black.

I guess supposedly the 540's are just a tad too small for the surround, but still fit nice. This may give you enough room for the rock guards. The 520's are supposedly a tad bit bigger but still fit..

You will have to remove the bumper cover and cut the ends of the bumper reinforcer off.

When you remove the bezels, you will see that behind the upper portion of the bezel is the bumper reinforcer. Mark it using the opening as a guide as to where you're going to cut.

As for the lamp itself, you will have to either obtain a mounting bracket for the inside of the cover (you'll see when you remove it) or fabricate your own to mount the lamp.

As for size, measure the diameter of the opening in the JDM bezel and then go onto PIAA or Hella or whatever lamp website you want to and look at comparable lamps and their respective specifications.

Good luck and have fun!

PS, you'll probably want PIAA's 510 series of lamp: http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/510.html

Hey Eric!

Just FYI, my JDM fog bezels have a 5.25" opening. The 510's only have a 4"od, which will leave a pretty big gap. The 520's have a 6" total od, but it looks like if you sit the light flush, directly behind the bezel opening, it should look ok.
The 540 series have a 5 1/8"od. I think that will be the best fit.

So I took one of my JDM bezels with me to an off road accessory shop, and placed a couple PIAAs in it to see how it looked. The 520s lens was a perfect size for the hole, but the lamp itself was too large to fit flush behind the bezel. The 540s fit inside the bezel, but were too small there was about an 1/8th in gap all around the lamp. This gap may not look that bad once it's in the bumper and there is just darkness behind it. Would still like to see some pics of someone running these before I decide.

Just out of curiousity, how are you guys setting up your DIY foglight mounting brackets. At this point mine are just some strips of metal with mounting holes, kind of in a cross. This causes the mounting point to have to be at the top of the light, which usually means an upside down lamp.

I have to redo the whole setup this weekend since I just had a new front end put in. Looking to see what better methods may be out there.

Thanks.

well i would but it's pretty much back to stock. the car got banged up and i needed to replace the drivers headlight, bumper beam, fogs, etc... so as soon as i figure out where i want to order my piaa 540's from, and get them in my hands, i'll be able to work on how i want to mount them.

The old setup was with some crappy SS driving lights. I have no idea how the mounting points will vary from what i had before, so i'm wondering how others are mounting PIAAs in a jdm fog setup before i start my own reiteration.

That's my lingering question at this point, how to mount them. Post some pics of the bracket you used for you SS, at least it'll be a starting point to figuring out how to mount the PIAAs. I'm guessing they don't mount too different from the SSs, just a post mount. The PIAAs may mount in a slightly different spot, but the idea should be the same.

Also if you have any old pics with the SSs on the car post those to please.

Take some pics of the OEM fog-lamp mounting brackets for me and I'll come up with some ideas.

I can't access my photobucket stuff, or even see linked photobucket pictures here at work, so I'm just copying the code out of an old thread when I installed the lights, I don't remember what the pictures are exactly, but I know they are of the car with the fogs installed. I don't think I have any of the actual mounting hardware.

I meant the USDM OEM hardware (that the USDM OEM foglamps were attached), not the shady-tree mechanic mounting brackets for the aftermarket lamps.

I'll be getting home late tonight, but I'll try to remember to go out to the garage and take some pictures.

Just ordered a set of piaa 540 plasma ion fogs.

Really? 'Cause I've got 4 Hella 500ff on a light bar up front on my car, I drive with the two center ones on all the time, cops don't even give me a 2nd look.
