Default Anyone in Phoenix do some side work on Subies?

I've got a friend in law school over there. Has an A/C issue and some mechanic quoted her $1200. It's a 2003 Legacy, 2.5L. I have to believe it's not the compressor and if anything might have a leak in the line. If anyone knows anyone that does some side work or have a mechanic that doesn't try to rape people on parts/labor could you post in here. More than happy to pay a fair price but being a student there's not a whole lot of available cash and it's getting to be summertime pretty quickly. I'd help but I'm over here in Florida. Thanks for any considerations/suggestions guys.

hey, ok so i'm the chick and it'd be great if someone could help me out. I am really pissed about this whole thing because I'm not an idiot and I realize that this ish isn't a $1200 deal.

However... in tempe I do need my a/c. heh. so yea, if you guys think you could be of some help to me hit me up. I'm workin on contacting a mechanic through friends and stuff but I'm in law school and my friends are nerds, you know how that goes.

high pressure hoses u can get for like 70 bucks reman... or new their a little over 120 iirc.. 2 lbs of freon shouldnt run u more then 40 bucks. when u got the quote for 1200 what did that entail? condenser? condensers are around 600 new compressor i beleive was something like 350 but dont quote me on that. Its hard to believe that your compressor, condenser, both hoses would all go out at the same time. and if they did u prob wanna go buy a lottery ticket because u prob have the same chances of winning the lottery than u do having all that shiet go out at the same time.

the price quote was for the compressor + a/c discharge line and rounded out to about $720

which got sketchy because the dealer said they were $165 + $460 which is 625 (then labor cost).

right now I got a friend of a friend who said he's going to look at it... this is just really annoying and i don't like the fact that i can't trust shops out here.

you can trust shops... just not any bootleg shops. remember to find out what kinda of warranty these places offer too. usually good shops will offer a 1 year unlimited mile warranty against manufacture defects. 625 for labor? hmm that sounds a little high. even at dealership rates. im assuming that they are trying to get over 6 hours of labor from you. what shop did u take it to?

That price sounds about right for any shop you take it to, but the price may vary slightly. Your best bet is too find someone who does side work on subies. If I had the equipment I would do it, but unfortunately I work at a GM dealer and don't have my own stuff to do it.

Let me know if you don't find anyone, I can fix it.

It's probably one of the most common problems.

Compressor is bad = replace and refill

There is a leak = fix leak

Electrical problem (not as likely) = find problem and fix, maybe a blown fuse or bad relay

subarus are not unique a/c setups, there very basic, if the compressor did indeed die then it is very possible that you could need to replace the orrifice, condensor and evaporator, if the compressor died and turned the piston or vane seals (whichever compressor type was on that year) into black gunk then that black death is trapped in the rest of the system and your never going to get that stuff out of an h-type condensor or evaporator. the lines you can clean however.
