Default Monster Tajima 2010 Pikes Peak car

Looks like Monster will give Rhys a run for his money this year at Pikes Peak. Anybody interested in checking it out this year? I say I'm going to go every year and never do.

Full details: http://www.livesockets.com/article.php?id=2630&siteID=

The race car for 2010 is the Monster Sport SX4 Hill Climb Special. Based upon a Low drag and High down force concept developed for the 2009 event and following exhaustive tests in the Monster Sport (Japan) wind tunnel facility, the 2010 race car has undergone extensive aerodynamic changes to adapt better to the further modified road surface which now consists of more smooth tarmac and less gravel than was present in 2009.

Monster Sport has also further developed the 3100cc Twin Turbo Monster Special V6 powerplant, now boasting 910 hp and 90.5 kg-m of torque in an 1100 kg body able to accelerate easily to speeds above 200 km/h in a matter of seconds.

Monster has been there for years. I think RMR is going to give Monster a run for their money.

Video up!

Wow... some of those spectator crowds look to be in some potentially dangerous spots... like WRC from 10+ years ago.

Ok, that was sick. How far back was Rhys Millen from this again? It seems that he has a LONG way to go if he wants to win his class, let alone break the overall record.

well Rhys had mechanical problems. I expect that if he'd gotten a clean run with no issues it would have been close.

I don't buy it. Excuses are for losers plain and simple.

Mechanical problems? Then test your shizz out more. I just think it's lame that the Millen / Red Bull team was all hype before hand saying how they are making a run at the record and all that stuff. Then they come out and fall flat on their face. It seems to me if they put 1/2 the effort into the race car that they do on the promo stuff, they might do ok.

That being said, I do hope that Red Bull and Monster have a close race in 2011 and it's down to the wire. It makes for better entertainment.

Agree a bit.

The build went long (imagine that!) and the car wasn't ready for testing in any appreciable manner.

They didn't have any time to map the center differential, so they ran it locked 50:50. They also didn't have time to map the rear wing control unit so they ran it max angle.

The car was also too light/front suspension wasn't right/differential wasn't right to give reliable and progressive turn in. Rhys was getting a lot of understeer and snap oversteer (I watched him spin it at one turn up top on practice).

The car won't be ready for a record IMO until 2012 as I doubt they will do all of the testing really needed to refine the car to the point of the escudo, which is a shame, as I believe the car could do it and Rhys/RMR has the ability but not the commitment.

Ill play, I really belive that No one has even half the experience with ppihc nor has anyone traveled up that mountion as fast as Mr Tajima consecutively. These are from this year, great driver and great personality.

And got these pair together with at test&tune Rod is very cool to talk with, lots of experience with him aswell.

hahahah, theres a few select areas you dont go "all out" but most of the drivers have tunel vision and know their limits. The safety there is slightly higher than other motorsports, theres a airlift heli onsite. They had to take a sepectator this year, had a stroke/seisure, it delayed the race for 45 min.

Agree...they are paving more and more of the road every year...by the time Millen gets the car sorted, I think it will favor his type of car more than Tajima's car...

In fact, by the time it's 100% tarmac, maybe some type of open wheel formula car with tons of downforce will be the type of car to have (think of those french tarmac hill climb cars that look like F3 cars)

They were suposed to have the whole top section paved for this year, but only got a mile down from the finish line. Tajimas car isnt the same as its been either, hes constantly developing the car for the ever changing condition at the peak. Like this year the whole back and wheel tire combo where way different than last. He called it the "low drag" version. Hes not going to just sit back and watch his record go down. Heres a pic of the car last year.

Then the 2007 recond year, this car is a constant evolution with a budget twice the size of redbulls ppihc car.

Great video! Made it out last year for my first time, definitely a great event, unfortunately couldn't make it this year. I agree that once the road is fully paved I think the type/character of the record setting cars will change a bit maybe.

Anyone else at fan fest notice that Tajima seems to be the only one breathing compressed oxygen in their car (that I noticed at least)? That's got to help out quite a bit with maintaining concentration as you get closer to the summit.

Rhys normally does as well.

A large number of the racers these days are CO locals, so the oxygen issue isn't as big as you might think when you live at 5-7,000 feet (doesn't mean you won't be huffing and puffing at some point still)...
