Default Post your custom CC or AOS! woohoo!

Ok, Im using a crawford AOS, but wanted a little more. I dont want any oil getting to the intake tract and have seen double and triple aos on GT-Rs. I thought why not make my own for my suby? I started with a 2.5 inch 6061 tube and some sheet 6061 t3 and some 3/4 inch 6061 t6 and started cutting.

On with the pics, I didnt take any during pics, kinda self expanitory. Ill weld it up at work tomarrow and post the finished pics. Plans are to get it completely polished. Feel free to post up your own custom setup, CC or otherwise...

this is the bottom, I used a -6 cap plug for a drain, just couldnt bring myself to put a ugly brass draincock on this.

I too am designing an air oil separator. Should be done sometime next week.

nope waiting for welding, my welder guy is backed up. All Ive done is more cleanup on these parts. I found out the ends and middle where 7071 al so I made them again from some thicker 6061 t6, took about a hour to rebuild.

Made a mounting bracket today for the aos. I think this will look cool, Im still waiting or welding though.

Heres the aos after welding, I just need to make a bracket and weld it on, then polish it.

This is where Im mounting it.

you get your can designed? I'm kind of wondering what the inside would look like?

Well, I've made a few prototypes but have yet to test them as I'm currently overhauling the engine. My 2 prototypes are made out of a 2" PVC pipe (other is a 3" pipe). The concept internally is a funnel like cylinder that forces the air into a 'cyclone' (much like Dyson's concepts which are from saw mills dust systems).

Air enters from either heads near the top of the AOS at a tangent. The air will exit at the top of the canister, but internally be below either inlets. So: as air enters the canister it simply cannot exit without spinning throughout the funnel shape. The idea with the funnel is to increase velocity which should encourage heavier particles to be expelled outwards... The trick I figure is to get the right funnel shape that will allow oil to drop to the bottom and be collected, while keeping velocity as high as possible which aids in oil removal.

How do you plan on getting any velocity/rotation from a breather vent?

have you thought of filling the inside with something like this

http://www.google.com/images?q=Ceram...iw=991&bih=561
They are a little on the expensive side, but i think a copper or stainless steel pot scrubber would work too

I've used the stainless mesh (like an SOS pad) in the past and it worked decently, but never felt that it was doing what it was supposed to do at all times. When installing the mesh it would typically bunch up leaving several large and undesirable gaps. The ceramic rings look promising, but cost and overall volume may make it less practical.

As far as increasing the velocity of the air/oil mixture: In a funnel, as the air and vapor goes from the large end of a funnel to the small, the velocity will increase proportionately as the radius decreases. Take a look at the Dyson vacuums and at other cyclonic separation devices. The trick is to make sure that the velocity increases enough to separate the oil vapors from the air. These systems are proven in many industrial applications with great success. The beauty as I see it is that as vacuum increases from the 'output' (which feeds into the turbo intake duct), the efficiency should increases as well since velocity within the funnel shape increase.

i don't mean to be a negative nancy, i understand and see the theory behind increasing the air velocity to try to get the oil to separate, but i just don't see the air moving fast enough without some kind of pump impeller to speed it up

Not at all. In theory this should work, and this is why I have prototypes to test. If it doesn't work I'll make something similar to what Crawford has or perhaps into a different design altogether.

Another way around this is to have multiple turns in the system so that at each transition oil stick to the walls instead of carrying through the air!

Your talking swirl. I used to work for a company that made Diesel fuel/water separators and did quite a bit of research on the subject.

(Free plug. I'm the guy who asked the auto-x question...)
