Default UPDATE: May Relocate in Washington...Need Suggestions

Hey guys,

I may be relocating in the Seattle - Redmond area for a job opportunity. But before I make a decision, I need to get to know the lay of the land. Which in this case, the cost of living in Washington.

Can I get recommendations as far as:

Car Insurance
Studio/Cheap Apartments (non-ghetto areas)

If there are any other small details that I should be aware of or missing, I'd appreciate all of the help!

Thanks

UPDATE 5/12/2010:

I was wondering if anybody is looking for a roommate or has an extra room that I can rent out. If requesting for a background check, please PM me and I'll give you my information. Also, I can add 10 references upon request.

I would also like to reiterate if there are any details that I should be aware of or missing, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Cost of living is high and it rains 400 days a year. You will love it. If you check out the vendor classifieds you can talk to Waterfall Insurance who just became a vendor here about the insurance thing. As far as housing goes you can search, this has come up a few times before for the same area and there should be some helpful threads to check out.

and remember, don't throw out juice cartons while driving around.

as Nick said, there's been other threads about people wanting to relocate here. regarding the housing, depends on how long of a commute you are willing to put up with. Redmond proper isn't going to be cheap. And if you go too cheap/ghetto, you'll soon be starting a "my subie got vandalized" thread. you don't want to do that.

good luck!

That really depends on what you are comparing Seattle too. Take a similar city that offers what Seattle does and I think you will find that our cost of living isn't that high.

I may be able to help here...

Cost of living is somewhat high compared to the rest of the country, especially if you are looking at the Bellevue/Kirkland/Redmond area. I have lived here all of my life but I like it a lot. You'll get used to the rain

I'd reccommend looking at the Bothell area, honestly. There are some nicer areas you can get a bit cheaper than living in Redmond and the commute to Redmond would still be reasonable. You can also get something in Redmond, but you'll spend a pretty penny more.

In any case, good luck to you! I've lived here all my life and love it. Not a bad place to end up.

Bothell is a good "compromise" area. I drove by a small 2 bedroom home this morning on the way to work with a For Rent out front; $790/month for it. Unfortunately no garage to go with it.

Yeah, but a garage is a must up here if you ask me. Both for protection and having a warm/dry place to work on your car (trust me, working on your car in the parking lot while it's 40F and raining outside is NOT fun....).

Going North? I leave Renton at 7:45, take Coal Creek to 405 and I'm in Bothell by 8:20... As long as you don't have to navigate the S curves it doesn't seem bad.

I now just avoid 405 all together in the morning.
I leave my house in the Renton Highlads at 750/55 and take May Valley to Coal Creek and make to school by 820ih
Traffic on the back roads is not bad but you do see a handful of cops on a few mornings

i live in Tacoma in the Stadium neighborhood. it's pretty clean, relatively cheap and close to Downtown. North Tacoma/Old Town aren't too far away and that is a really nice neighborhood but kinda spendy.

Yeah, for sure--ESPECIALLY at the dip on Coal Creek by the running trails. Seems like 25% of the time there's a cop sitting there. Of course, I drive like a granny so I never get pulled over

Surprised I've never seen you on the way out there; I drive that route every morning.

I also live in the renton highlands. Parts of it are ghetto, other parts are actually very nice. I take 405N up to redmond every day, ends up being about a 40 minute commute or so. The drive home, on the other hand, is much worse. But it's a lot cheaper than living in bellevue, that's for sure. I do know that apartments aren't toooo bad up there, but houses... forget about it.

LOL, K. I'll look for the Panda STi on the side of the road.

AND I miss the sonic yellow WRX? Jeez, I must have seen you guys driving around before. o_O I'll keep a closer eye out. Didn't realize there were so many of us around here--the only one I ever see is a blonde girl driving a champagne STi with the spoiler removed.

I live in the Canyon Park area of Bothell (just 2 minutes away from exit 26 of I-405). My office is in Redmond near the Town Hall. Normally, I-405 is pretty packed heading southbound so I take all back roads to Redmond and I get into work in about 20 minutes. On Fridays, I-405 opens up and I take that into work and it takes between 15 and 20 minutes. The point is that a commute from Bothell (or Brier, or Lynnwood) and other less expensive places to live is not such a bad commute into Redmond (if I have to guess you're going to Microsoft--only 5 minutes more than my commute).

Yeah! Smokin' hot, too. See her every once in a while driving by the QFC.

I used to drive May Valley all the time when it was less crowded. I still take it home often times or take it to cruise late night just because it's fun even at the speed limit

haha, i'll keep that in mind. thanks for the replies guys. i did some finance calculations, and the salary will cover my cost of living, but its seems to be not enough to live comfortably. i was thinking if i could move in with a roommate. it would make my cost of living a bit easier.
