Default Just bought my first Impreza!

I've been an Outback owner for a little while, and always looked longingly at NASIOC... I've been a huge Subaru fan for a long time and finally bought my first one in January. It was an '02 Outback and it came with a ton of problems. Total lemon. Well, I finally got rid of it tonight - traded it in on an 07 WRX wagon! This car is amazing! So fast and just incredible to drive. Anyway just wanted to introduce myself. I would post pictures, but it was dark by the time I closed on the car.

Also, does anyone know if there's upsides or downsides to the wagon vs. the sedan? And being new to the WRX what sort of simple things can I do to it to make it a little more fun?

blah blah blah read and do lots of research before you touch anything on your car!

common stupid mistakes people make is they hear some mod hyped up on this site by others or by vendors and they go do it to their car thinking it's going to make a world of difference. and usually, all that happens is:
1) very little to no difference, or
2) your car rides like $h!t or is damaged

i've made my share of mistakes and i've paid for them. hopefully you'll learn from the mistakes of others

Thanks for the advice. I plan on being extremely careful with her, but am looking to learn lots.

welcome to subiworld.
Best general resource around here is Unabomber's manifesto, at the top of the Newb forum, my best advice would be to read it before moding the car, you will get credit from the specialists and Guru's for doing so when asking more specific questions.

Thanks man. I've jumped into the manifesto a little bit. Still pretty over my head, but hey, I'm here to learn. And avoid asking stupid questions. They don't seem to go over very well.

Thanks man! I was hoping if someone could tell me whether or not this is the stock exhaust. Regardless it sounds pretty ferocious.

Congrats... That exhaust is definitely not stock... also, check to see if there is an aftermarket downpipe mounted to your turbo... If there is you are going to want to make sure there is a tune on your car or else you will end up with a blown engine.

Ok, thanks, for sure... I'll take a pic under the hood and hopefully somebody can help me out with that.

looks like there is a silencer on the exhaust which you could probably take off as well... just undo the bolt on the right and it should come right off

Here is a picture of the turbo downpipe. Looks stock to me, but I really have no idea.

and here is a picture of the engine. See anything out of the ordinary? It looks a lot different than the old NA EJ25 on the Outback, so again I have no clue.

Oh and I took that bolt off in an attempt to remove the silencer, but nothing would budge. Is that sleeve around the muffler just supposed to come right off?

eyeah definately looks like a silencer in that sucker, most silencers fit very snug, little elbow greese should slide it out.

Ya know, I gave it another shot, but there's not really anything to hold on to. I grabbed some pliers and clamped on to the ring in the center and gave it a few tugs, but there's a little play in the exhaust and I didn't want to break anything. I'm pretty sure I would end up leaving the silencer on anyway, but it would definitely be nice to hear what she's got to offer without it.

Just to verify what it is, I took out a flashlight and looked into the exhaust. The tube in the center runs about 8 inches back where it opens up into a pretty large exhaust pipe. Does a silencer run back that far normally? Or am I dealing with something else?

Also thanks to everyone for the compliments! I couldn't be happier with this car. And I'm glad everything is pretty much stock, I think the previous owner took pretty good care of it. The transmission still feels tight, not like it's been beaten to death and about to lose a clutch. I'm sure I'll be making a few mods here and there down the road after I learn some more about it, but mostly for experience sake. Took me a long time to realize just how cool cars can be.

the silencer tube goes in about 7 inches.. see that inner ring? grab that with your pliers (after u grease up the outer ring) and pull from once side, then another .. pull out towards you straight.. should pop right out with enough force..

Alright guys, seriously. I just took the bolt off again, grabbed each side of the middle pipe with a pair of pliers and started pulling. Nothing! I was moving the whole car back and forth, but that silencer wouldn't budge. Gonna have to pick up some spray lube or something.

If it's being that stubborn, just leave it. For all you know, it may be too loud once you get it off and then you may have damaged the silencer.

I'd recommend Epic Engineering lowering springs/sway bar kit, Kartboy end links, and some summer tires. These are relatively cheap and easy upgrades that make a huge difference. Also, Kartboy short shifter and bushings...
