Default FS: in wNY Project car 2002 WRX Wagon WRB would be $6500, Rod knock = $3500 - SOLD

My daily driver 2002 WRX Wagon has developed a rod knock, and I don't have the cash flow to get it fixed, so I'm looking to sell it the way it is.

This would be great starting point for someone who would like to build a hybrid 2.0/2.5 WRX, or actually anyone who does their own work and can swap a shortblock for less money than a dealer would charge.

I can post pictures in a little while if there is any interest, but it's just your average, run-of-the-mill, stock, World Rally Blue WRX Wagon with 128k miles.

Other than the engine, the only issue is that the driver's side front fender is a little dented, but I have a matching replacement fender I haven't gotten around to installing yet.

This is in Rochester, NY. The car can still be driven, (although I haven't been doing so,) and that means serious shoppers can actually have a test-drive to verify the rest of the car is good.

If it weren't for the engine, I think this would be about a $6500 car, so I'd like to get $4000 for it the way it is. - PRICE REDUCED - first $3500 takes it, or perhaps trade for something I can use for a daily driver. (RWD or AWD Preferred.)

SOLD - I got a nice Legacy Outback in trade.

Here are some pictures I took with my crappy digital camera. I didn't want to push it out of the garage, and I'm trying not to run the engine any more than I have to. (I haven't been driving it since the rod knock showed up.)

As I said, bone stock.
I looked at the odo: 128,951 miles
I had a new cam timing belt and tensioner put on at the subaru dealer just before the problem cropped up. (And yes, I did make sure the noise wasn't a problem with the belt.)
They also did the fuel system recall to take care of the slight fuel smell on cold mornings.
I changed the oil and filter just after the noise appeared.
I am the second owner. I bought it directly from the original owner who is a buddy of mine. He got a brand-new WRX, the bastard ;-)
I changed both rear shocks myself just after I got it about a year ago. (I used new KYBs, the ones that are basically OEM replacements.)

One of the pictures shows the moderately dented fender and the included replacement that just has to be bolted in place. (That was going to be the next thing I was going to do once the timing belt was done.)

Yes, there is a tentative offer on the table. It's for less than I wanted to get, so I've let WRBlueberry know a higher offer would mean being outbid.

This means if anybody else is interested, you'd better speak up or you might miss out!

sorry for your loss wish i could grab that car myself.i think a short block 2.0 is 1,800 or so from subaru maybe i'm wrong and i got a price of under 700 bucks to rebuild heads for 2.0 wrx like new from a very experienced shop. I found out a local tuner uses the same shop for their rebuilt heads to.I did some research before i bought my car from my brother i kind of wanted a worse case if my engine blew up i wish my 03 was a wagon better lay out with kids lol good luck with sale somebody is going to get lucky on this deal

The wagon has been nice for all my band's PA gear. It will be hard to replace this car.

I found a similar number as you did for a new, assembled shortblock, and I'm fairly confident the heads are fine. I wish I had more time, skill, tools, and cash, and I'd swap in a shortblock myself.

I even toyed with doing a 2.5 shortblock with the 2.0 heads like so many people have done. Oh well, maybe in another life.

I pushed it out of the garage so I could get some better pictures.

Current "bid" is $3500, so if somebody else wants it, they only have to get closer than that to my desired $4000.

Remember that I will be including a color-matched front driver's side fender to take care of that dent. It should be an easy install.

In these pictures you'll be able to see the only rust spots that have shown up - small spots near the rear wheel wells. I'll include a fresh bottle of WRB touchup, and they should be easy to prep and fix. The rear wiper arm is also rusty, but that sould be easy to take care of.

You should also be able to see the scuff on the rear driver's side door below the handle, but it looks to me like it's just minor clearcoat scratches and should polish out fairly easily.

As I said, this thing may not be as pristine as those $8000 cars for sale here, but I think with the engine work it needs, $4000 is reasonable.

Bump.

There have been a few people who expressed interest but then never contacted me directly. I'd love to see this go to a Subaru fan who knows its potential!

Anybody have any questions?

First $3500 takes it, but I can't go below that.

Ouch. I've already come down from the $4000 I wanted, so I don't know, I'm still kind-of firm on $3500. It's really a good deal for someone who would swap or rebuild the shortblock themselves.

This is in Rochester, NY which is about an hour east of Buffalo. Not exactly your neck of the woods. It's available for a test drive, since it still runs and is registered and inspected. (I'm not currently driving it, though.) I think it might even be good for one more trip

I've added my plan B option: I could trade this for something I can use as my new daily driver. I'd prefer RWD or AWD, but it's at least got to be something I can start driving every day right away. The more unusual the better, although I can't completely blow-off practicality. I know I won't get a car that's as good as this car is outside the engine damage - I'm looking for a car that would sell for $300-$4000.

I think I may have a trade option or two.. Would you be willing to toss a couple of dollars on top of the right trade?

Well, I'm willing, but it's a lack of cash that forces me out of this car, so I don't really have much to work with. I could probably come up with a few hundred for the right car, but not much more.

Yes, actually, that's VERY interesting. Would you be looking for a straight trade? Anything wrong with it?
