Default iPad in Subaru STI

This is an ingenious option... removable security... too bad the line out voltage would be rather low other wise it may sound somewhat decent

I would really like to see this for a 2006-2007 WRX/STI ......... But Im loving the kit also. To me Think if you can still retrain the factory radio and still use the ipad would be even better! that way you can switch off to the radio and ipod well thats just me and my input

do not like! it is way to big and looks out of place IMHO, now if we could get a tunning program like ecutek / ecuflash ect.... then it would be a functional accessory and i would love to have it in that case but my 2din nav touch unit does everything i need it to and looks flush...

Seems like a dumb idea. It has half the functionality or less than a good car PC and the install of the car PC is way cleaner.

This looks like a HUGE invitation to get your window smashed out by every crackhead around because they will see it as an easy score; I mean it barely looks mounted in there. With an in dash screen or something like that, you can cover it up with a fake bezel and it looks much harder to get out quickly.

I would hate to have to dismount this thing every time I left my car for 5 minutes just to hide it away from thieves.

Also, where's the factory radio? Not there? So what are you going to do about radio and CD's? This will simply highlight AT&T's terrible service coverage. Satellite radio except for about everywhere outside the major cities.

I think this is dumb, but it will likely sell well because of all the iDouches.

I've used the 'Simplify Media' app on my iPhone and streamed my whole music collection from Phoenix to LA. The only times that I had any issues were in areas where there wasn't a terrestrial radio signal anywhere to be found anyways. So, I would just play some MP3's that were locally stored.

But what do you do about the lack of power? How does it interface into an amp?

wow. Ugly. And you lose use of the two air vents and hazard switch? And you still have to yank the thing out every time you stop the car to keep some crack head from busting out your window for a snatch and grab? I'm still not sold on the idea. I would much rather have a car pc (windows box or mac mini).

Air vents definitely aren't as effective as before. I'm OK with that, as I gain a lot of capabilities with the ipad. The hazard is relocated to the button panel left of the steering column. Very easy move.

And yeah, I put it in the glovebox when I'm not in the car. It's no different than any deck. Most people take it out and pop it in their glovebox. This takes 5 seconds and really isn't an issue for me or those that I've showed it to. Kinda a standard for aftermarket units, no?

I actually had the mac mini setup prior to this, using a 7" lilliput 629, USB GPS, startup/shutdown controller, etc etc. Way more expensive, but the real reason I ditched it was that the software, despite having some front ends designed for touch interface, really didn't function like I wanted. Swap in the ipad where apps are designed only with touch input in mind and things so much smoother. Additional perk: instant on/off. My mini took 45 seconds to start up. Ugh.

There's also the point where the mac mini was ONLY usable in the car. The ipad can be taken out of the car and used anywhere. Very versatile, easy to add/remove content, and expand capabilities by just downloading more apps.

Definitely a fun an different view to the carputer, but I have no complaints about switching.

Very valid points. Well, it may not be my thing, but three is a lot of hard work put into it and I can appreciate that. Good luck and I hope you make some good money off of it. Hard work and ideas like this deserve to be rewarded. if the typical success of apple products and accessories is any indicator, you will sell more than a few.

Perhaps I would be more on board with a smaller profile/screen. There are some new 7 inch tablets running android that look promising and there will be even more at the beginning of the year with the actual release of a tablet version of android. Perhaps a 7 inch screen mounted in landscape would be more my style. Is there a 7 inch ipad being released? I heard a rumor or two a while ago, but I thought they were put to bed.

Please excuse my rudeness in my pervious post. Your hard work shows.

I don't mean power for the ipad, I mean how is it going to interface into the speakers in the car? It obviously can't push enough power out to them on it's own so it will have to interface into an amp somehow.

The iPad sits in the Apple iPad docking station, which has 2 outputs in the back: 3.5mm stereo, 30-pin connector. You can pull audio out of either of them, send it to a volume control knob (like the Absolute RSW250), then to your amp. Really easy.

My vendor will set the final price, but right now it's shaping up to be $225 normally, but I'm making sure we get a group buy for NASIOC members at $175.
