Damn Chris! Your dad and I were talking about your car this week and we were both excited over it. It was great to see how supportive he is. Just another small bump, you'll get it! Let me know if you need anything.

Thanks Tony, I am at my end of wits with this car. I will get it fixed already talked to Dom about it and he is going to take a look at it as soon as I get it out. It is really hard to say what the failure was. Thats kinda why I am just going to go the get it fixed and figure out what caused it only for the reason to prevent it again.

if it was losing pressure than it must be something else than the pure fact of it just spun a bearing. something else failed causing it to loose pressure.
did you ever figure out the e85 breather thing? |

We dissagree Dave, it was running extremely well then power dropped and the oil presure dropped 15psi. It still ran well and had 48psi oil at idle. Then they did a slight no load roll and you could hear the rod. I also talked to a few people and the ethanol in the oil can is normal under break in, it slowed down considerably.

Chris and I spoke at length about the nature of the problem.
Currently, the plan is as follows: Remove engine tear down engine piece by piece to determine extent of damage. Inspect bearings. The type of bearing wear and number of worn bearings should give us a good idea what happened. Craig and I reviewed the blueprinting sheet that we completed when assembling Chris' engine and can rule out assembly or clearances. My current suspicion is that a rod bolt stretched or broke. These rods were provided by Chris and had been used in his previous build and have been torqued repeatedly in their life. I think we'll find that there is minimal damage (they shut it down immediately and never pushed it) that worst case will require a crankshaft, new bearings and new rod bolts. I'm guessing the crank will still be good, but we are planning for worse. If it is a rod bolt, then I suppose we should have been more diligent in getting the history of these bolts before we decided to use the rods. This engine while still new, has had a very hard life. From the first minute this engine ran it has been plagued with engine management issues. The first time it ran on four cylinders properly was only a week or so ago and this engine has been run numerous hours prior to that. It was also broken in on e85 (against my better judgement) and has shown excessive e85 in the oil at each change. regardless of all that, we'll get to the bottom of it and get her up and running again soon. |

Dom is correct, these rods are manly turbo tuffs. They where in my striker engine that ran a total of maybe two hours and never where under any real load. Basically idled around and a little road tuning with little to no boost. I had a reputable shop resize them after to reuse them and was told by the machine shop bolts where fine and I should have used my better judgement and changed them.

So I have the engine almost out, looking at my options at this point. If it is repairable easy enough than do so as long as we find the cause and fix it. Or start over with stock block with rods and pistons. I am so broke because of this car I could have almost had half the cost of a new gtr. How sick is that and besides driving it the few hundred miles last week it sat four years. Time for a new cheaper hobby like rabbits at least then when they post me off I can eat em.
