Default Riding in a friend's WRX, major misfire,CEL!

I am catching a ride in a friend's WRX, as he pulls out to pass another car the engine cuts out like it has hit the rev limiter a couple of times. RPMs were midrange. Steady check engine light results. My friend is older, his car is unmodified, manual trans, mileage about 7000. Any thoughts? (I generally understood that the CELs others had experienced were without major symptoms.) My friend will eventually take the car to the dealer to pull the codes, but any ideas? Is a violent cutout typical of a misfire? Thanks.

I would wager it was a fuel cut from overboosting possibly. But it sounds like fuel cut too me. The CEL that would relate to this would be somthing like "boost solonoid out of range".
