Default 05 Impreza RS burning oil @ 60K miles?

I bought my 2005 Impreza RS at 42K miles from a Dealer. It was a lease return and was in Immaculate shape and was always serviced by the dealer.
I started running Castrol Syntec Synthetic Blend when I did my first oil change and have ever since. I have been changing the oil every 4500 miles. I just turned 61K and unfortunately am just over the warranty period.
I was leaving my friend's cabin, my dad was standing behind the car and noticed a puff of smoke come out the exhaust as I left. I checked the oil when I got home and it was near a quart low. I am pretty close to my normal 4500 mile oil change as well.
Is it the oil I am using? Should I go back to regular oil? Do I have a larger problem and should I bring it to the dealer?
This is my first Subaru, I love it so far, but find this to be a bummer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you can be certain that the puff of smoke was blue, I'd discount that as coincidence, as it could very well have been moisture. I'm not a huge fan of Syntec (for the price) but it's not a bad oil, especially at your relatively short intervals.

A few questions:

How often do you check your oil?

Is this the first time you've noticed it at anything lower than full on the dipstick?

Was the car on level ground?

Have you checked your PCV valve or replaced it since you purchased the car? It's often forgotten, and simple to replace.

Maybe your valve stem guides and/or stem seals are worn. Starting a car at -25F below during a Minnesota winter cant be good for the valve guilds. Add dino oil, revving the engine or anything else ='s lot's of possible wear.

Try switching oil to Valvoline Max Life synthetic blend.

- Not often enough. But will be checking it weekly now.

- One other time, but it was not quite this low and I was near my usual oil change interval too.

Was the car on level ground?

- Yes, in my garage and it was sitting overnight.

- I have not, but will look into this. thank you.
