Default Video: 2011 Ford GT500 spanks last year's model by nine seconds at VIR

Quote:
We know firsthand that both the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 and GT aren't just plenty quick they're downright scary fast compared to their predecessors. It should follow, that the king of the heap 2011 GT500 should be similarly faster than the 2010 model. Let's just go ahead and call that one an understatement. Ford just dropped a tasty video on the interwebs showing the car lapping one of our favorite tracks Virginia International Speedway.

Ford's engineers had it in their minds that the new aluminum block with its 120-pound weight savings should help the car click off the 4.1-mile Grand West portion of the track about three seconds quicker than the outgoing car. Thing is, the 2011 GT500 managed to lap the track in 2:58.5 a full nine seconds faster than last year's version.

Progress is most definitely a good thing. Hit the jump to see the car do the dance.

Car looks really fun - understeer if too hot, easy oversteer anytime with throttle, and nice balance once the front bites down. Looks like some serious power steering as well - probably not much feel there, but I wouldn't mind flogging it for a bit.

The new Mustang line up is very impressive. It's too bad that this body style was released last year. The 2011 improvements make it a completely different car.

Im interested to see some comparison times.

Seems that the Grand West course is hardly ever used. I wonder why they didn't just run the normal full course?

Anybody have any lap times for the Grand West course?

It's the course C&D uses for their lighting lap articles. I am sure ford used it so people will compare it to the times from the articles.

with 1.5 miles of straights I bet you can, but VIR is about 1/2 that.

^^^^Agreed.

There's no way that car is completely stock. Seconds faster than a Ford GT, 911 Turbo and R8 V10 and on par with a Z06? Puh-leeze.

Thanks for the times. I'm impressed.

But as previously mentioned maybe not so stock?

2011 GT500 = .145 HP per pound or 6.9 lbs per HP

2010 Z06 = .16 HP per pound or 6.2 lbs per HP

Add in the Z06's superior chassis and performance figures, and that's enough to call BS.

^ This. ^

No way it can beat the Ford GT chassis with essentially the same engine.

Just for S+G:

Ford GT = .158 HP per pound or 6.3 lbs per HP

You all are comparing lap times by completely different drivers. Also, the C&D LL is a bunch of crap; not a very controlled method of testing.

True - I'm sure it isn't exact, but I imagine each car is within say 5 seconds of what it should/could run - there may be some that they hit the nail right on the head and got a perfect lap and others that had some time left on the table but couldn't collect due to the driver, conditions, car variance, etc... which still leaves the GT500 in some very fast company - and begs the question already raised about mods - but it looks fun nonetheless!

I wonder how much faster it could have gone with a better driver. How many times did the guy hit the rev limiter? Once or twice a lap because of gearing, not out the question. He hit it 9 times, one was legitimately on approaching a corner and it would have cost more time to shift. One was on a very straight section. And on the first hard right he tried to exit in way too high a gear. His line wasn't horrible... but...

Always wanted to go to Monticello. Maybe when I have a dedicated track car. I've been trying to convince one of my friends uncle to bring his Ferrari's out there.
