Default Clinton Racing STi takes 2nd place at the first inaugural race at Oregon Raceway Park

We got to participate in the first ever race held at the new Oregon Raceway Park in Grass Valley, OR. It was quite the event with about 175 entries spread throughout 7 race groups.

My first impression of the track on my first lap out... I thought I was going to throw-up from all the tossing back and fourth and up and down. My second impression.. DAMN THIS TRACK IS FUN!

I don't think there is a flat straight section on the course. The longest/fastest straight is uphill, curves to the right, then right at top of the hill it abruptly changes to down hill as you head to the braking zone. The braking zone is definitely one of those sections that makes you double guess your brake setup.

The fastest we got to (according to our GPS lap timer - Trackmaster) was 118 mph, but the track keeps you so busy on the steering wheel that you hardly remember that it isn't the fastest track you've been on. It was a constant challenge to remind myself to check the gauges and watch the turn stations.

The racing was tight but there was also plenty of passing zones. All this made for an extremely fun weekend. We qualified 3rd in our class and 9th overall with a 1:59.2. I felt like there was quite a bit of time I was leaving on the course, but just not quite comfortable with the track to push it really hard.

As the race started we the rain sprinkles began.... again (for the 2nd time in the last 2 races). It wasn't raining hard enough to dampen the track so we could all still race pretty hard. A Camaro with much more horsepower started next to me, and got decent jump on the green flag. BUT I held the inside line for the first 2 corners so I was able to stave him off. By the time we were heading into T3 I had pulled a few car lengths lead over the Camaro and was setting my sights on 2nd place in my class.

Unfortunately, I knew I was significantly off the pace of the 1st and 2nd place cars (I had been all weekend). So I was just going to try to be smooth, work on my rythym, and hope the race would come to me. However, I was still able to improve my times down to a fastest lap of 1:57.9.

On the 2nd to last lap the strategy worked due to the 2nd place car getting into a skirmish with another (non-class) car. Both cars came together in a tighter than 90* corner (and have the battle scars to prove it). This shoved the 2nd place BMW out into the dirt and tumble weed, giving me the oppurtunity to overtake him.

After 3 races, we are now comfortably 2nd place in the points standings. The next race coming up is at Portland International Raceway in Portland, OR on June 5th/6th. It ought to be just as exciting.

A few pics.

Great work!!! Sounds like most of the bugs have been worked out of the car. I can't wait to get back home and take her for a spin. It is looking like the beginning of July I should be home TTYL.

245/40/17 Hoosier Koni Challenge tires on 17x9 Rota DPT's.

Take a look at our website for more info, I've put all the mods that I could think of off the top of my head on there.

You never know I think we are coming up on the brakes as being the next weak link. BUT a) The st-60 calipers and 14" rotors won't fit with a 17" wheel and b)I don't have the $6k even if they did fit

The tranny is still grinding a bit getting into 4th gear, I'm going to flush out for the Motul/Shockproof mix for the next race.. hopefully that'll band aid it until the end of the season.

Give me a call when you get back into town.

Thanks!

Watch out, I'll hit you up with a sponsorship proposal with a comment like that

Thanks guys. You'll really enjoy ORP. My only knock is that the weight of our cars is a real disadvantage with the off camber corners and flowing nature of the layout.

If you have an actual proposal, resume, and race schedule you would be far ahead of most people who ask for that. far far ahead.

That and we already know you're actually racing.
