If they do build it near the air port. I hope to god they make the area near the airport more accessible by then. I had trying to go over there because of how bad traffic is on a normal day. Really close to the Driveway though...

I hope they open to real track days.

This is awesome news. I can't wait to check it out. Do they need some extra corner workers for the first event?

A day after the sudden announcement that one of the world’s highest-profile sporting event is heading to Austin, more details are emerging, including a $25 million-per-year state government incentive offer.

On Tuesday, Formula One World Championship Ltd., Formula One Administration Ltd. and Austin-based promoter Full Throttle Productions LP announced the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix will be held in Austin from 2012 to 2021.

Promoters, who want to build a track specifically for the race for the first time in its history, did not specify a location and offered few other details.

On April 7, the state governor’s and comptroller’s offices sent a letter to Formula 1 top executive Bernard Ecclestone saying the state would pledge funds over a 10-year term, which could be terminated if Full Throttle fails to secure the race.

After the first year of the agreement, the state also opened the door to provide more money from “any legally permitted sources,” according to records obtained by the Austin Business Journal.

A state spokesman said Wednesday that no deal had been finalized, and he did not know when it would happen. Officials said state Comptroller Susan Combs spearheaded the project at the state level. The comptroller is the chief steward for state’s finances, acting as tax collector, chief accountant, chief revenue estimator and chief treasurer for all of state government.

“We gave them a quote for the press release, but beyond that the comptroller’s office handled it,” Gov. Rick Perry’s spokeswoman said.

State spokesman Allen Spelce said while the announcement caught government officials off guard, the comptroller’s office has been working on the deal for about a year, and met several months ago with Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and his staff.

The mayor’s spokesman said Leffingwell hosted a meeting at city hall with state and racing representatives last month. Leffingwell knew about the pending announcement last week, but did not know the exact day the Formula 1 headquarters would announce it.

While no location for a track has been announced, it will most likely be within the Austin city limits, the spokesman said.

I camped next to the corner workers last time I was at Indy. They use volunteers from the SCCA corner worker ranks. So, start working corners for other events, and you could be out there. They get great seats.

Now the not-so-good news. I sure hope it's a better design then his last few boring tracks.

Tilke To Design New Austin Circuit

By Jonathan Noble
Thursday, May 27th 2010, 07:55 GMT

The new Austin Formula 1 track, which will host the American Grand Prix from 2012, is to be designed by Hermann Tilke, race organisers have announced.

Shortly after revealing its 10-year deal to hold the US event, Austin race promoters Full Throttle Productions have now earmarked a site for the circuit and confirmed that Tilke will be involved.

The exact location of the venue has not been disclosed, but Tavo Hellmund, managing partner of Full Throttle Productions, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press that its was 'more than 700 acres.'

Hellmund also ended speculation about who would design the track by confirming that F1 regular Tilke, the man behind track designs at Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Shanghai, and Sepang, will be involved.

Race promoters said the track would be "one of the finest permanent road course facilities in the world. Fans should expect the craftsmanship Tilke is famous for, with a priority placed on green building and a track similar to the great grand prix tracks of previous generations."

Wait...what?.. you're missing the point there. The hippies are going to freak out about the entire project... the land-use, the noise, the influx of uber-rich folks tooling around in their mega-buses/motorhomes/whatever. The general clogging of various traffic arteries. The use of state funds to finance something that -celebrates- the unbridled burning of fossil fuels at prodigious rates. While F1 cars may make power efficiently, I seriously doubt they do it 'cleanly'... even if they do, it's the last thing on the list for the hippies to get torqued up about.

Again, not that I give a flip... but that was the point i was making.

If you listen closely, you can hear their patchouli plants screaming...

Well, a full tank of fuel, yes. No regulations on how big or small it may be, but they can't refuel during the race. It's about 50+ gallons for a 150 mile(ish) race.

In Austin, these are generally clogged anyway.

the rest of it, yeah, they'll likely be nonplussed by the situation.

If Tilke is setting up an office in Austin this might actually be serious.

"The site is said to be in hilly terrain and Tilke has been asked to create a fast and challenging circuit in the mould of classic European venues such as Silverstone and Spa."

That would be awesome!

What's gonna piss me off is if they actually do build more or better roads out to this place, they'll more than likely be toll roads. F the toll roads. ****ing scams.

Can I haz 100 please?

Does anyone know of any timetables for completion of the track? Seems like 2 years is not long enough of a time to build a 3 mile track w/ all the amenities/infrastructure.
