Default Loud Howl at 75MPH-80MPH freeway driving...

Not sure if this is the right place for this, so here goes.... I'm having quite the loud hum-howl at speeds around 75 to 80 MPH during freeway driving.... I'm hoping it just my Falken RT 615's that my be the problem.... I guess what I'm worried about is that I might have a Transmission or Rear Diff issue..... I have no other noise like the one I described during any other form of driving.... Hard acceleration, high speed over 80 (not that that ever happens ).... Thanks for any input fellas.....

Specs on the car? Why do you think it is the tires?

Mirrors, wing, brake ducts, inner wheel well liners.

Worst case scenario.. a wheel bearing.

If it sounds like it is only coming from one corner of the car, I say wheel bearing.

Like mentioned above, it is the mirrors. The first time I heard this I thought it was the turbo, but upon further research I found out it is a common sound coming from the mirrors.

Here you go:

Mirror Howl - At speeds above 100mph (+-10mph depending on wind) you may start to hear a loud howling noise. It resembles the noise an open chimney makes in a storm. It has something to do with the airflow around your side mirrors. The way I fix it is to fold them in while at the track/drag strip, as they're not needed there.

Is OP really asking this if it was his first time at that speed? Wouldn't that be the only way it could be the mirrors...

Either a) It's not the mirrors or spoiler if the noise just started occurring recently.

or

b) It's the first time OP has gone this fast... how would he know what his car is supposed to sound like at that speed? Why make the post if this were the case?

Giving the benefit of the doubt to the OP... it's not something that has always been there on the car.

Well.... According to Discount tire its a combo of the design of the Falkens, and the slight negative camber of the rear of our cars.... Apparently the noise will be pretty noticable after a tire rotation (which I just had done this week) because of the way the tire wears on the rears.... I guess it will take up to 3 thousand miles for it to go away..... Interesting... This will be the last time I buy Falkens again thats for sure....

Two things.

1)

2) You're asking a discount tires employee a question about your performance car making noise... and trusting him? Unless your running the tires down to the carcass or are leaning on the reinforced sidewall EXCESSIVELY (Don't make me repeat that I've used the tires before) then I don't see how the tires are whats making the noise.

Again OP, and I'm asking seriously, was this your first time going that speed in your car on that road?

OP??? And no man, it was a joke...... Not to mention, your case with the 615's might be different than mine.... Most of the IWSTI members are having the same problems I am.....

Do you have any upgraded rear bushings? My car howls like a banshee between 75-80 too. Mine gets louder every time I add more bushing upgrades. I wouldn't worry about it

My Dunlop Direzza Star Spec Z1's also added noticeable road noise, but I would think you would be able to tell the difference.

Check your tire pressure if you haven't already. If the are off, left to right, by more than 3 psi you will hear the diff a bit more. I was getting the same noise in my 06' sti (yes different rear diffs, I know) and checked my tire pressure. One side was 25ish and the other was 32. Added air to balance it and the noise was gone. Hope that helps.

if you hit the clutch pedal, does it go away? does it vary with vehicle speed? does it vary with engine rpm?

see, if the sound stops with hitting the clutch pedal, then it can't be a side mirror or anything exterior-related. and if it varies with vehicle speed, it's likely something final drive ratio and downstream.

i had a problem [that sounded] like this and after some basic troubleshooting (akin to the questions i'm asking you), the local dealership actually replaced the entire transmission. they said it was one of the bearing systems and that it was too much bother for them to crack the transmission open, find it, replace, rebuild, etc.

though, let me tell you, that even with the new tranny (which still feels stiff), the noise is somewhat still there, though a lot quieter. i'm not sure if to some extent, all of the STi's have some whine/ howl.

Could your shifter be vibrating - I think that would be more RPM related, but maybe b/c you said it stops when you depress the clutch?

I remember test driving my previous VR6 and thinking WTF is that noise???!?!? Turns out it was the mirrors! I kept asking the guy if he heard it..thought I was nuts.

I am putting money on the tires, could be slightly low on air, out of alignment, not worn correctly, not balanced perfectly.
