Default New Infiniti M and G models to share same platform with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Quote:
The strategic and technical alliance between Renault-Nissan and Daimler already has had its share of rumors but the latest is quite interesting. According to Japanese car magazine Best Car, the replacements for the current Infiniti M saloon and G coupe will share a common platform architecture with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Mercedes-Benz and Renault-Nissan both have not confirmed this report yet. However, it is a development that complements the activities related to this alliance. In fact, Mercedes-Benz will be donating four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines to Infiniti. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that they have agreed to a broader platform-sharing strategy.

The whole reason Japanese luxury cars exist is that so people don't have to put up with the garbage reliability and overpriced service/parts of the Europeans.

And if the new G will share a platform and engine with the E-Class and cost less, then what's the whole point of buying an E-Class?

The G37 is a cool car. Too bad it's going to be replaced by a wallowy Mercedes. Daimler should have done the deal with Honda, anything would be better than the TL and RL.

Funny mb is generously donating their 4 and 6 cylinder to infiniti. Like they need them. I hope this alliance is short-lived.

Like ^^^ said, MB is better off teaming up with a company like honda.
After all these years they still cant get the TL and RL right.

I don't see anything wrong with this. There is a big difference between platform sharing and badge engineering, and I'm sure it's the former. Considering what AMG is capable of, I don't think the problem is that the performance potential of Infiniti would be limited by the MB platform. In fact, as far as luxury market goes, MB-Infiniti alliance is probably the least susceptible to internal competition as they are sitting in the opposite ends of the spectrum.

As for Honda, well yes, Honda would love MB's help in getting the Acura division right for once, but what the hell does Honda have to offer? The point of this alliance is that Infiniti will get help from MB, while MB will get help from Renault. Renault has very competitive line of small cars in Europe with some excellent small diesel engines. And MB needs to expand down-market especially in Europe. I don't think Honda will be much help in that regard. It also mirrors the BMW-PSA connection, except that I think this one has even more potential because Renault-Nissan has its own luxury division to share things with MB.

Seems like Infiniti could use some help from MB in the reliability department:
