Default ATF fluid level fluctuation question

Soooo.....

4eat impreza 2.5i....

checked hot atf fluid today showed below L on hot side.....figured either engine wasnt warm enough or wasnt on level surface. Drove home 15 mins on highway. checked at home. on a clean dipstick first dip showed full, second dip showed half, third dip showed below low.

went and bought a quart drove it on the highway again and when I got home I checked and on a clean dipstick it showed over full first dip, then just above full second dip, and then between low and full on the third dip?!?

So uh wtf is up what am I doing wrong?

also do you add 1 quart to bring it from low to full?

I generally drive to get it warm and then check on level ground - as long as it is on the stick I don't worry too much. Did you look underneath to see if you have a leak anywhere? I would add in smaller increments and than drive and re-check.
