Default Before low power, now, no start.. POSSIBLY SOLVED

here's the gist of it...
For the past month or two, my 93 impreza L (auto trans) has had very low power below about 2500rpm. to the point where it REALLY struggles get up to 40mph. Once it hits about 2500-3K it'll take off because i've got it floored trying to keep up with traffic taking off from a redlight.. Once it gets moving it seems to be alright. Also, on the freeway once it switches into OD, it doesn't seem to have enough power to cruise at 70 and climb ANY kind of uphill slope without downshifting. It's getting piss poor gas mileage to boot. (18-20 on nonstop freeway driving. 13-15 in town).
I changed my fuel filter and fuel lines under the hood and it didn't fix anything...
A few days ago it died all together and won't start. It will catch for a second and then sputter out after a few (2-3) seconds, but it'll never stay running. I replaced plugs and wires and am looking at the coil as my next possible suspect, but before i dump $80 into it i'm trying to get some second opinions.
It's not throwing any codes and it seems my left cylinders are sparking stronger than my right...
I haven't actually tested my fuel pressure, but it will spray pretty strong when i pull my fuel line off after the filter. Also, it will fill a 20oz water bottle with fuel in about 4-5 seconds, so it seems like it's getting AT LEAST enough fuel to idle.

am i making any sense..?

I'm REALLY trying to get this fixed by this weekend (trying to make it 120 miles to my parents for mothers day..), but i don't have the money to just keep replacing parts all willy nilly. Is there a way to test my coil without just swapping it out for a new one? Any other possible 'causes you guys can think of?

Like i say, i'm trying to get this fixed fast so call or text me if you've got a minute.. (phone number listed on profile. not listing here so bots will hopefully not find it)

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

-Chris

wouldn't that throw a code (code 32)? Also, i was under the impression that it only had a single o2 sensor so what do you mean by front o2 sensor?

thus far i've checked...
Fuel pressure as per repair manual instructions.. 40psi
Replaced plugs and wires and tried a NEW iginition coil..
Checked signal to injectors with NOID lights. all flashed fine.
checked fuel return line.
replaced gas (thought maybe i had bad gasoline)
tried unplugged vaccuum lines on intake... nothing
checked timing.. it's dead on.

The ONLY error code i get is when i had a jump box hooked to it and had it running for about 15 seconds.. It gave me code 35. I tried bypassing it by unplugging the fuel vapor lines connected to the cannister by the passenger side headlight and still did the exact same thing.

I HAVE been able to get it running when i take a spray bottle full of gas and spray it into the intake (i unhooked it after the MAP sensor). I have to spray a lot of fuel to keep it running, but it WILL run as long as i keep spraying fuel...

The car's been down for two weeks and i'd like to get it running again....

Anybody have any suggestions? anyone..........anything?

ALSO. i am pretty sure the reason it was running poorly before was because two of my spark plugs were pretty much domed off on the electrode. I've since replaced with NGK v-power plugs and a set of oem style wires from oreilly's.

hmmm, on a 93 I'm not sure if it would have 2 oxygen sensors. Either way, front O2 is pre-cat, rear is post-cat. You've checked everything fuel related....except the injectors. When's the last time you ran some injector cleaner through it? or seafoam?

Are you sure it's a MAP sensor and not a MAF? Once again, I'm unfamiliar with the 93's, so I could be wrong, but clean your MAF.

You say it had power above ~2500 rpm, but how high can it rev? With a car that old, I'm inclined to suggest a plugged cat.

My first inclination was also a plugged cat. I had a POS catco cat from Jegs on my old '95 that superheated and melted it. It turned into a molted ball and then cooled that way. It rolled to the back of the cat body on acceleration and blocked the exhaust. The day it happened I managed to make it to work, but once I got there the car wouldn't start.

We took a plasma cutter to the cat housing and peeled it open. The ball of metal fell out and we welded it back shut. Car started and ran fine after that. Not everyone just has a plasma cutter and welder at their disposal, but you can disconnect you exhaust between the Y pipe and the cat and see what happens.

On a '93 there is only one O2 sensor in the cat, just after the Y pipe. That could also be the problem. Unplug it and see what happens.

Thanks, guys.

I ran some injector cleaner through it on friday. I drained my fuel filter and filled it up about half full of oreilly injector cleaner and it didn't help.

I'll try unplugging the o2 sensor first and if that doesn't help i'll just pull the exhaust off and see if that fixes it. If it's just the CAT i'm going to run it down to the local exhaust guru and have him weld me on an off road pipe... yea for not living in an emmisions county!

Thanks again guys. I'll let you know what happens after i try your suggestions.

Was curious if you found the answer to your question? My buddy has a L with similar symptoms, We ran to autozone and had them do a quick scan on it and found his front 02 sensor is bad and hes also got some knock. His car is still running just gets so weak through the powerband.

unbolted my cat from the y-pipe and unplugged my o2 sensor and it hasn't fixed anything. It still does the exact same thing. It'll barely fire and then sputter to a stop after 1-2 seconds.

any chance this could be due to the coolant temp sensor? something like.. idk.. it thinks the engine is overheated so it won't let it start or something..........

This thing has been down for nearly a month and i'm no closer to fixing it than i was the day it broke down.

one way to find out about the coolant sensor, unplug it and try to start.

I've started mine before w/o it and all that happened was that the fans were on constantly. But this is on an OBD 2.

Since this is an automatic....is there any chance that the tranny could be holding the engine back?

The green power light on the dash stays on...
It won't run long enough to see if it goes out, but i think it blinked right before it died...

Are there any failsafes that prevent the car from starting under certain conditions? any sensors that could be faulty and preventing the car from starting?
Is there an easy way to test if my injectors are actually shooting gas into the cylinders? I've got signal to them, but i don't know if they're squirting fuel..

Give me anything here guys...I'm at my wits end with this thing..

Looks like i only disconnected ONE of the TWO cats.. I unbolted one from the other..
Today I managed to break one of the bolts loose on the first with an impact after learning the car's got two catalytic converters. It gave me just enough of a gap in the pipes to ge the car started and running. It ran kinda poorly and hesitated really badly when revving it, but it ran. IT FINALLY RAN!!!!
