Default New 2010 WRX sedan owner

I'm a lucky guy. A trip downstairs to my garage will now be greeted by 3 great machines. The newest of which is the 2010 silver WRX we bought last night. Add to that my 2008 Civic Si coupe and 2008 Kawasaki ZX-10R. I am spoiled, and have the best wife. Going to be offing a 2000 Honda Insight that the WRX is replacing. No pics of the new car yet, but you all know what they look like.

I'm doing lots of searching about what is the best thing to do for this car. As far as tuning, I'm seeing Cobb's AP, open source, tactrix. Done 3-4 hours of research so far. At this point, Cobb AP looks to be the way to go? Bummer living in SoCal with 91 octane fuel. Cobb recommending leaving the air filter stock, that'll save a few bux. That makes that easy. Not sure how much a catted DP will make along with a cat-back, or if a cat-back is necessary, or just an axle-back? As long as the OE resonator doesn't have any surprises inside with regards to neck downs, maybe even hacking off the OE muffs and having a custom fabbed axle-back would do. As far as a tune, found someone in called HB speed in Huntington Beach, CA about an hour from my house that I've read good reviews on. Stage 2 seems to be the way to go, and I would leave things be at that point. If I can get this car up to 285hp or so WHP and 300+ tq, I think that would be enough to allow me to ditch the motorcycle, making more room in my garage, and putting my wife at ease as well as myself. I love riding, but barely get out, and I drive for a living where a perefect driving record is a must. With as many wheelies as I like to do, maybe it's best if I get out of it now.

Decisions. But yeah, my garage is full of fun toys now. Any one of which would make most guys very happy. I'm blessed!

Yes you need a DP and a full CBE. As far as the air filter goes leaving it stock really is the best thing to do. The only reason I went with my Perrin CAI is I love the sucking sound of my snail. The AP is a great tool for people who dont live near a tuner, I always recommend protuning though. The AP has a lot of mixed reviews. Stage2 is a completely different animal! Enjoy the car and be safe.

If you're looking at any type of open source tune, check out Torqued Performance. I have their stage 1, and it's perfect. I've heard stage 2 gets even better. They also make maps for the AP. The real benefit to open source is that it's much cheaper. The AP, however, is much easier to use.

So, I don't need all the data features of the AP, and already have an OBD2 scan tool as far as the code clearing goes. If I go to a Subie tuner, will they be able to open source dyno tune instead of AP tune and save me some money while giving me the same results? I' don't want to run someone elses map, do want to get a custom dyno tune and am willing to drive several hours to do so. If I'm just going to have it tuned and not mess with it myself for a long time, Open Source the answer?

I had a 98 GSX for almost 10 years and it was modded quite well running mid 12's on pump gas and 8.0 1/8th's. That was quick enough, and I'm confident a stage 2 tune will do the trick on the new WRX from everything I've read.

Yes go opensource you will more than likely even produce better numbers than an AP would give you.

RiceRooster aka Gil, you're welcome to check it out anytime. Although I made my wife drive it to work today. She started backing out the Si, so I ran downstairs and said, "Hey, you're taking the WRX!" Maybe it's kind of a waste since her entire commute other than the 1 mile series of stopsigns/stoplights and a viscious freeway clover leaf on-ramp, is a 18 mile shot down the freeway, after which she's putting for 2 miles down rough downtown SD streets. I'd probably get better enjoyment out of it using it at my job for delivery!
