Default Running on 3 Cylinders, any pointers?

Hi Guys,

I've run into an odd problem. On my way home last night, I notice the engine's not turning right, so I slow down to listen to it, and there's definitely something shaky. This is a new EJ22G build with about 300 miles on it, never boosted past 7psi while I'm breaking it in.

I pull over and turn ignition off and crank it to see if it'll start. At this point, the CEL comes on, and the engine starts, but it's definitely running on 3 cylinders.

I limp home and unplug plug wires to figure out which one. And it's #4 . So I pull out the plug and it's blackened with carbon but otherwise intact. I don't know if it's because I drove home on 3 or that is the cause. I pull out plug #2 and it looks fine. I swap them, and still no go, #4 doesn't fire.

I checked (and swapped) plug wires, and injectors. Both look fine but still running on three. So now I'm going out to do a compresion test on the cylinder and getting the code pulled from the ECU. From the list of probable errors, I suspect the error code will have to do with the injector.

The only noticeable mod on the car are the 850cc denso injectors, which initially made the car run extremely rich, but the idle air solenoid valve was adjusted and the low end was leaned out (with S-AFC) sufficiently for the ECU to be able to adjust mixture on its own (did it with the Subaru Monitor plugged in, so the Alpha Correction was within 5% of nominal)

Anyone have any experience on this? Or why the plug was black? or why still running on 3? I've unplugged the injector so I can get the car to the dealer.

A compression test would turn up the most... it'll tell you what kind of problem you're looking for. If that is low, it's mechanical. If that is high/normal, then it's electrical or the injector. You could check for spark on that cylinder too... could be the plug with not making contact as well.

Well, I did the compression test tonight..
All cylinders but #4 are around 135 +-5 PSI. #4 is at 25psi, so definitely something wrong. I hope it's a burnt valve. I'll pull out the head this weekend and see what's up with it.

you have a bent/burned valve or a blown head gasket...i doubt it's a piston but you could have bad rings.

do a leak down, they are much more conclusive.
