Default Possible Tranny issue, grinding with no load

I know this question has already been asked somewhere. I looked around and couldnt find my exact problem written up. The mechanic thats looking at my car seems a little stumpped. My warrenty limits the mechanics I can go to and there are no Subie specific mechanics on the list of approved places. So here is the problem.
My car pull and shifts nicely through all of the gears but when I put it into 5th and let out on the clutch it starts to hum loudly, sometimes louder than the engine. Only in 5th gear though. The hum matches the wheel speed but not the engine speed which confuses me into thinking that it's not the tranny. In every gear though, there is a grinding sound as soon as I lift my foot off of the gas. As long as I'm keeping load on the car there is no sound but if I have to slow down or coast to avoid traffic it makes this ungodly noise. I can feel it through the shifter which makes me think its the tranny. Am I looking at two unrelated problems? I really don't know what to tell the mechanic. Any help would be great.

That's odd that 5th went out.. it's usually 2nd on these cars.

Might be a cheap fix if you do the labor yourself.

I had planned to do it myself but I figured as long as the work is free let someone else do it. I'm just worried they are going to spend forever fixing things that are not broken. I don't want my daily sitting in the shop for weeks at a time...thats why i got rid of my 240

yeah it really sucks. i just got done doing an engine rebuild on my wrx. but now i'm hearing these same noises you're explaining and its definitely not from the engine. and its only when my foot is taken off the gas pedal to coast. i get a loud grinding noise coming from the front but then also when i am on the gas and in fifth gear theres a humming noise that sounds like its coming from the rear. i'd really just like to have my car running smooth again.
