Default Help settle a work dispute...

Yesterday I sent an email to one of my coworkers from my phone that went something like this -

To: John
From: Daniel
Subject: database admin software

Bill submitted a helpdesk ticket yesterday asking for a configuration change to the admin software. Usually Jim does this but he is out of the office. Can you please make the following change to the configuration file: ... Call me if you need any assistance.

Thanks,
Daniel

Today the manager asked about the helpdesk ticket and I walked over to John's cube and asked if he had gotten my email. His response: "No, I didn't get it." I show him the e-mail in my sent items and he says. "Oh, I didn't read that because it wasn't addressed to me." I point out that the To: line has his name, the email is from me alone (not from the helpdesk system) and the subject line does not look like the helpdesk system emails which are formatted with a ticket number. He goes on about "I get hundreds of e-mails a day and yours didn't start with "Hey John, or John, and the first line mentioned Bill so I didn't read it."

Me:
John: Your fault, you didn't address it to me.
Me: Wait, so you are claiming you shouldn't have to read an e-mail if it doesn't start with your name because your in-brain e-mail scanner ignores it?
John: Correct
Me: You fail at e-mail.
John: YOU fail at e-mail.
Manager: Actually, I agree with John, I get sooo many e-mails, I don't read them unless they are addressed to me in the first line of the e-mail.
Me: WTF seriously? I get hundreds of e-mail a day too, I have filters that separate most of the cruft and you guys do as well.
Them: Sorry, 2v1, you are wrong. Nyah Nyah.

Am I wrong?

CN: I work with a bunch of crabby old guys who need their e-mail spoon fed to them.

I worked in a very large medical company.

Now I work with a software development company.

Thats total retardation, my brain went full of **** reading it.

They obviously dont use rules in outlook (or whatever mail system) and if the email comes to my inbox, its designed for my eyes to read. If every email came with my name in the subject I would think it full on retarded.

Subjects give me a short or cliffnotes of whats in the email, the message body is the meat of the subject.

Sorry you work in an office full of unintelligent tools who can't work an email system like its designed.

From now on I would recommend 72 point font in blood red or rainbow in the message body labeled :ATTENTION: JOHN: just to get the point across.

Kudos to you for knowing how email works.

Some people I swear.

Attention spans are short. Sometimes you have to be concise with your explanation/direction in an email, regardless of the age or education of the person receiving the email.

Your email was concise, but sadly not short enough for that dumbass.

There are a LOT of people here that are like that.

I ALWAYS make sure to put the names of the people it's actually to in the first line. "Hi John, Bill," as a first line works. I give people no excuse.

You, sir, are correct! And I don't believe that he stopped reading at the first word. He didn't want to do Jim's work.

Send him one that says Bill told you to give him $50 if you get a reply in 10 minutes, and see how long it takes him to reply.

I voted "cater" not because they are old and need coddling, but because a little extra effort on your part (and this should be no surprise to you since this seems to be a recurring event) would make your life a lot easier and your career more fruitful.

See, I *usually* do that as well, but in this case, I was sending it from my phone while I was working outside so I did not. I consider that to be good etiquette but technically it shouldn't be necessary due to the fact that one is the recipient of the e-mail in the first place - especially when one is the ONLY recipient as in this case.

IMHO the burden is on the recipient to properly filter their own effing e-mail and admit if they failed to properly do so.

Now that's better!

That reminds me of creeeees' hacked vbulletin interface that has all his Photobucket images integrated into the forum interface so he can just click and drag. If I wasn't so lazy I'd do it to mine as well.

Tell your co-workers that they're "ritarded"

And then tell them that they should read *ALL* emails from their co-workers, and if they've got an issue with co-workers sending spam, take that up with those who are abusing the system.

For ****'s sake, email is a tool to communicate and your jackass co-workers are retarded.

Oh, and in the future, start all correspondence with them, including spoken word, with "HEY JOHN!.

You're right, your coworker and your manager are dumb.

I email all day. Part of my job is to give out quotes, via attachment. Two gripes:
1. Nobody sees the attachment, even when I say "see attached" or "attached is a quote" etc.
2. The thank-you reply. If I needed a reassurance that you got my quote, I'd have put a request for a read-receipt. I don't need your one-word "thanks" when I DO MY JOB. It's what I get paid for, and you're just adding to my clutter.

c/n: technologically inept people or those who haven't learned web etiquette should have something uncomfortable happen to them in a timely manner.

Adjust all email templates to have "ATTENTION: <Name>" in large 72pt font, bolded, in red. Then you start all messages after that.
