Default Seeking Feedback - COBB Tuning Drag Racing Contingency/Bounty Program!

Hey guys, we are seeking YOUR feedback for a program that we are going to be formally announcing very shortly! We'd like to get some last-second feedback on the rules and classes we've chosen. Also, any other ideas on how we can make it better for you guys -- we want to give thanks to YOU for being out there and making it happen at drag strips around the country! We will gather feedback in this thread and get the program finalized and re-posted. We also need to determine the most appropriate way to distribute payouts when the time comes (feedback also welcome here).

The basic premise is that we’d like to give a small cash thanks and a big tip of the cap to those of you who are out there running some really amazing times and speeds using the factory ECU powered by an Accessport. We’d also love to inspire some healthy and positive competition in the drag racing community! NO NEGATIVITY, PLEASE!

This will be an annual program; the initial offering this year will cover all timeslips earned from 1/1/2014 to 12/31/2014. Any valid timeslips from before the program was announced will qualify; hopefully you haven't thrown them away. The 2015 program will be expanded and tailored from the feedback and success of this initial year's offering.

The only basic rules for ALL classes will be that the car is running on a factory Subaru ECU with COBB Accessport as the current engine management strategy. If the quickest (lowest ET) and fastest (highest trap speed) for a class are two different cars, the bounty will be split between the two. Classes for this initial will include Unlimited, Street Car Challenge and Women’s. In the interest of fairness, there will be a unique winner (or multiple winners for quickest and fastest) for each classes.

In order to qualify for a class win and payout, you must provide at least basic photographic proof of the vehicle being used, the AP inside of the vehicle, the vehicle car number and the complete time slip. We anticipate that this will be self-policed by the community but please don't make us question anyone on their results, this is for fun and it will be most rewarding if everyone plays fairly.

PROPOSED rules are as follows:

Unlimited: You guessed it, anything goes. The only basic rule is that the engine is powered by a Subaru ECU and COBB Accessport. $500/winner.

Street Car Challenge: This one will be fun! We are going to our own custom twist on the rules; I think you’re going to love the competition. $500/winner base plus bonuses.
  • Vehicle must retain current registration and insurance.
  • Wheels must be 17” diameter or greater; DOT Radial tires required.
  • No base rules on exhaust type and exit locations. +$50 BONUS for winning with full catback exhaust *OR* +$100 BONUS for winning with fully recirculated EWG and catback exhaust. (Street Car Challenge)
  • OEM or OEM-styled bodywork must be retained. +$100 BONUS for 100% unmodified OEM exterior body.
  • Door cards and full interior required. Minimal modifications to allow for NHRA-certified safety equipment OK. +$100 BONUS for working stereo with minimum four speakers.
  • No turbo rule. +$50 BONUS for winning with functional air filter. +$100 BONUS for winning with 67.9mm or smaller inducer *OR* +$200 BONUS for winning with 62.9mm or smaller inducer.
  • Air conditioning optional. +$100 BONUS for winning with installed and functional OEM A/C.
  • No piggyback ECUs, auxiliary intercept “launch boxes”, etc. Add-on nitrous controllers and similar OK.
  • Automatic transmissions are allowed if they are same type as original. For example, a 2005 LGT with 5EAT must retain a Subaru 5EAT transmission. No auto swaps allowed.
  • Sanity check: Don’t be silly. Of course things like fully functional front and rear brakes are required in a street class. Whatever you choose to cram under the hood, be it nitrous or otherwise, is up to you, as long as it can pass a basic tech inspection. Harness bar/cage/chute rules will not be enforced by us as they are not universally enforced. However, be smart and ALWAYS wear all of your personal safety equipment!
Ladies: Pretty simple one here just to give honor to the badass lady racers out there showing you guys how to race! However, we are gonna honor the true spirit of the rule and say that she needs to be the driver AND owner of the car in order to win this one. No cheating by hopping in someone else’s fast Subie if you have a Prius in the driveway! $500/winner.

---------------
Edited 10/31/14 with changes from latest community feedback.
---------------

Looking forward to your input and feedback! Hope everyone is excited!

Cheers

Lance

I veto the exhaust rule and piggyback rule unless you can incorporate the features I asked about since the reason for the piggyback is based on the features missing from the AP.

Ladies class will be a joke. Dudes will just register jointly owned vehicles in their lady's name to win.

We hope not! We'll ask for simple proof of who was driving if something seems fishy. I think the community has more class than that anyways.

Your recent accomplishments with the 15 definitely highlight the performance of the stock ECU along with COBB custom code.

Do you guys think it fair that someone can win multiple classes, or should we only allow 1 winner per class?

I like this idea a lot but I know in the past guys have flipped titles to their spouses names which is kind of lame. It is sad you will always find people in the community who will cheat and do things like "mine likes" from other message boards to make themselves seem like a big deal. It might be best to leave money out of the equation. I'm sure there are some true girl racers out there who deserve to be recognized.

I like this idea, but the classes seem very lopsided. I would imagine you'll get nearly all the entries in the Street Car class. There are not very many drag specific Subaru's out there running the stock ECU and there are not a lot of females building/driving Subaru's down the dragstrip at all (or maybe I just haven't seen them).

I'd be more in favor of breaking up the Street Car class into several classes. MAP's Proving Grounds has a pretty good class division for splitting up the turbocharged imports at their event. These would likely have to be tweaked a little (mostly removing necessary things) to be more Subaru specific.

Here's a shortened list of the MAP Proving Grounds categories (based on turbo size). Full details listed below. Not sure if you could support 5 categories (maybe reduce the payout for each category), but if you could I think this would get a lot more people interested/involved. The way it is now, there are probably only a few people that will be competitive (your Street Car class will likely be low 9's).
  • Real Street (RS/U) - 62.9mm turbo
  • True Street (TS) - 67.9mm turbo
  • Outlaw (OT) - 76.9mm turbo
  • Stock Appearing (SA) - Stock location 61.5mm turbo
  • Stock Appearing Unlimited (SA/U) - Stock location 61.5mm turbo

This is just my 2 cents. If all you're really trying to do is find the fastest car running an AccessPort, then your classes should be fine. Also, I think you should only be able to win 1 class. If you can win 2 classes with the same run/car, then the classes are poorly chosen and/or there isn't enough competition.

I'm not sure that RS/U and TS are different enough to attract two distinct crowds. The only effective difference from the current rules would be adding a second class for below 62.9mm? But we could probably just make 67.9mm limit a hard rule for a street car class? And then make a +$100 bonus for winning with a 62.9mm or smaller?

Was thinking of a stock turbo-style class as a 4th option. Will closely review what they have for SA and SA/U. Thanks!!

Turbo size shouldn't matter unless we are going to start breaking things down by weight as well.

A 3200lb car with a 6466 should be faster then a 3600lb car with a 6466.

If turbo restrictions are in place then weight restrictions or penalties should be added as well..

In order to not over-complicate things I would split classes up based on some common Subaru differentiators like rotated vs stock location and FMIC vs TMIC.

So, aside from potentially adding a stock location or stock turbo class, here's what seems to be mostly agreed-upon changes:
  • One winner per class.
  • No base rules on exhaust type and exit locations. +$50 BONUS for winning with full catback exhaust. +$50 BONUS for winning with fully recirculated EWG and catback exhaust.
  • No turbo rule. +$50 BONUS for winning with functional air filter. +$100 BONUS for winning with 67.9mm or smaller inducer *OR* +$200 BONUS for winning with 62.9mm or smaller inducer.

Is there a reason why there is always such a big deal made about the interior? If someone with money is allowed to throw on $10,000 in weight reduction mods, then why isn't a poor person allowed to gut their car? Weight is weight right?

What does an air filter have to do with what ECU Im running? I have a 30R and the stock TMIC on my 09. I made most everything and don't have an intake so I cant be apart of this?

Or swap to an 04 STI ECU via harness merge iWire has done some really killer conversions with 32-bit ECU as of late.

Both of these are about the "spirit" of a street car. Most would agree that street cars have seats and an air filter I think interior rules will stay for this initial year but the air filter part will be optional (bonus offered for winning with one but its not required).

Is it?

A 3200lb street car with full interior seatbelts airbags etc

Or

3200lb car with only a dash board, steering wheel, 1 seat

Which would you rather drive on the STREET ? Better yet which one would your friends, gf rather ride in?
