On the one hand, I agree that CA has some pretty rediculous laws, and I WOULD be in favor of a blind tailpipe test (i.e. if my emissions are within the limits for my year/make/model, that should be it).

HOWEVER, I think you're sadly mistaken if you think your no-cat exhaust would come anywhere close to passing a sniffer test. Oxides of nitrogen AND hydrocarbon emissions both go through the roof without a cat.

As for getting busted? Well, scrappydo can tell you about his exhaut ticket, but IIRC that was based on noise, not emissions.

I know two people who've got cites to report for a smog test because a motor cop idling in traffic behind them could smell the change in emissions that go along with no cat. Fortunately for them they were able to rebuild pseudo-OEM exhausts in time for the test else they may have faced major fines for removing the smog equipment.

Turbo'd RS's? There's near-zero chance you'll pass the visual, unless you have low friends in high places (as an anonymous Subaru tuner often says). 95% of the shops I've been to do the visual first which means you won't even GET a tailpipe test.
OTOH, I'm sure there are places that don't even crack the hood except to scan the barcode on the hood sticker...

I was being sarcastic hence the . I know there is no way I will pass with the fore mentioned set-up.

low friends / high places, I don't know about "low", but if they were to "help" me, I would not refer to them as low . I would refer to them as helpfull .

if the car passes emissions who gives a shlt?

If I were to get in trouble with that stuff, i'd get johnny cochran (is that how you spell it?) to defend me and use his chewbacca defense, "IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!"

Cool

i've been pulled over about 6 times this year and not once did the cops ever mention my exhaust...one time he looked in my hoodscoop though, i guess he might have been looking for an intercooler.

Ive been pulled over twice for my BPM exhaust. I run a turbo setup and straight through 2.5" piping. The BPM exhaust does nothing to help either. It is essentially straight through without even any kind of fiberglass fill to quieten it down! Its sounds mean as all hell tho.

I think I may get rid of it sometime, getting a bit too loud.

As far as exhausts, well if you get pulled over, and you just might, you will be guilty, period. You cant proove your innoscence, so just pay the 87 bucks and move on. I just recently got one and the system is so currupt you have little to no chance to win.

Thats the worthless California Legal System. Lots of laws they cant enforce.

sorry to sound so angry, but I am over this. Its just so unAmerican, the way things are done here. I sometimes think that the California government would be happy to tear up our US Constitution, and burn the peices.

this is so true. just like... if your car passes the "sniffer test" but fails the visual, you still don't pass. what kind of crap is that! even though the car is within the legal limits you are still screwed . I wonder what will happen with my turbo set-up and 3" no cat exhaust* .

I've got a pretty loud exhaust (at least that's what I've been told) and I've never gotten pulled over. I've gotten looks from the cops, but that's about it. Good luck!

I believe that certain cops hold a prejudice or a hatred for loud-lowered-Asian cars. Of the two times I've been pulled over in my Camaro. The cop could have cared less about looking under the hood. He just issued me the citation and got on with his night...which consisted of busting other racers out in Mira Mesa.

If you've ever been to the races, or just happened to notice when an import car gets busted that is higly modifed, the cops always wanna see under the hood because they know that alot of parts on Japanese cars are not CARB legal. Unlike on my American car, everything installed has a CARB number and passes smog easily, and the car has 400 ponies.

So what can we all do? Live with it. Drive smart, don't show off, don't street race, and keep the exhaust noise down. My Scooby's got exhaust, but I specifically did NOT want a loud setup...so there's a resonator inline. I believe Scrappydo's got Stromung on his car, and while it may not seem loud just revving the engine up, at highway speed it was enough for him to get pulled over.

Got a fix-it ticket on my trcuk because the exhaust was "modified to increase sound" Didn't try to fight it, but blew cigarette smoke in the cops face.. I was pissed.. I get pulled over, but the ricer CRX that drove by (under a bridge) as I was stopped, going "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" didn't even get noticed.

No tix in the Sube yet, with the Tanabe Racing Medallion... knock-on-wood

And I set off car alarms over 50 feet away!!

Isn't there some difference in the laws regarding exhausts that you can't modify the stock exhaust but that you can replace the exhaust if it should be damaged (or some such)?

Which should get you past cops, at least for simply having a non-stock exhaust.

(this is not dealing with CARB exemption, different issue).

For an exhaust only, just make sure you take the car to either an out of the way place (any shop that is in a town that ends in -ville should do), or to a pass or don't pay place. That way you're not out the $30 while you swap back your stock system...for a couple hours.
