This show looks very promising. I've never read the books, but I assume they're good. Any fans of the series here?

That's wild. I could pick out what scenes were from what books. Does this mean it might be a faithful adaptation? I certainly hope so.

I'm a big fan of the series. It starts off kind of slow (like most fantasy novels do), but picks up pretty quickly about 1/4 of the way through the first one. Then it's pretty much go. And no, he doesn't drag a description of how someone looks into 2 pages, ala Robert Jordan.

Great series.
If the show sucks as badly as the Sword of Truth/ Legend of the Seeker ****...meh.

And yes, the last few books of this series needs to release so I can finish the series.

Yay for the one fella who is finally closing the Wheel of Time series for Jordan (RIP Mr Rigney)

I was laughing hysterically during the LARP scenes because I used to work with a guy that did it every weekend. The movie is spot on in that respect.

Love this series. I never really liked fantasy but someone bought me the first book as a gift. I think I'm excited (?)

Martin creates an amazing, and very large, world. So good.

There are lots of ASOIAF fans here. There's a thread kicking around somewhere with some discussion but its been so long since the last book that it's been dead for a while.

The HBO adaptation is VERY promising. They are being quite faithful to the source material from what I've read (though they do have to make some changes since the series can't be told in the same way that the books are). The casting is top notch and HBO has thrown a good deal of money at it so the production values and overall quality should be on par with Rome, Boardwalk Empire and so on.

Can't wait.

I thought it was book 4B, with "Feast of Crows" being 4A? Or did the companion piece to FoC come out already? I love the series but FoC really REALLY sucked ass. His idea of splitting the story geographically was a horrible...and he's gotta stop introducing even more characters. @_@

No, it hasn't I also don't consider 1 book split into 2 to be one book in 2 parts. It's 2 separate books, dammmit! I don't care if it's because if the story lines run parallel time wise, it's in 2 books.

Then he needs to stop killing off the major characters.

I think he's written himself off a cliff with all the people and events. Kind of like writing yourself into a corner but the other way round.

If the series is successful HBO will will have material to work with for may years until the first four books are done, though.

Hey man, Tad William did it w/ book 3 of his "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" series:
Amazon.com: To Green Angel Tower, Part 2 (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, Book 3) (9780886776060): Tad Williams: BooksAmazon.com: To Green Angel Tower, Part 2 (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, Book 3) (9780886776060): Tad Williams: Books
(book 3 - part 2!). Although that might just be the paperback version; the hardcover was sturdy enough to hold all the pages. Definitely a fantasy series that I highly recommend. It takes awhile longer to get started but it's an amazing ride - and actually ends.

That's actually what I loved about ASOIAF actually; no character was sacred and anyone could die.

Hmmm. That'll have to go on the Christmas list.

Tell me about it. What other author would be willing to kill a major character, yet alone several? It would be like killing off Samwise, Gimli, and Legolas. Not that any of us would really mind Sam dying.

This series looks like it will be good. GRRM has been talking about it on his (not a) blog for a while and has been fairly closely involved in it so I think it will end up being good. Plus HBO just doesn't seem to make crap lately.

That said I was displeased with the turn that A Feast for Crows took and hope that he can get the series back on track.

I loved the first 3 books, and tore through them very fast.

A Feast for Crows was rather meh. It gets very political, and moves VERY slow. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that many of the characters that Feast focuses on are not my favorite.

Crows was my least favorite of the series until I re-read it, and then I just started liking it more and more. It's still not my favorite since it doesn't have much on my favorite characters (except Arya) but I thought he did a good job on it.

In other news, HBO released a long "making of" trailer for A Game of Thrones this week. It was posted on Martin's blog but it seems that it was labeled private sometime in the past day and I can't find another stream for it. It looks quite promising though. You get to see almost all of the main characters in costume and just a few frames of some characters that hadn't been shown before such as the Hound and the Mountain.

This entire 13 episode season (and everything in that trailer) is from just book 1.

Not sure if serious, it's an HBO television series which I don't think he'd do.

In fact, the Director's position is one of the few things I'm NOT excited about. David Benioff.

Well, it's got that ugly ****er from all the Ridley Scott medieval movies getting his head chopped off, so I had to ask.
