Ditto on Dance with Dragons. If I remember right, I preordered it. In November.

Wasn't it originally supposed to be out mere months after A Feast of Crows?

Yeah, and then he re-wrote it. I am so excited right now!

And here's a good new HBO trailer.

25minute "Making of" video. Some excellent new footage in this one of the Wall and the Eyrie specifically.

The level of detail that went into this production is pretty amazing.

I was all when he appeared and they showed the white walkers. I don't think I had a full appreciation for what in Martin's imagination as the characters casually reference 'the others' in day to day curses.

(just started book 3)

I am so excited to finally see this. I don't have anywhere to watch it though. GAAAH! The announcement that has been lost in all this hubbub though is that the next book is coming out in mid July.

I'm gonna watch this unencumbered by having read any of the books before hand (did this for most of Harry Potter). That way I'm not gonna be picking the show apart for not being the book.

I'm gonna wait 'til the series is done before I get the books.

... Yeah, I know.

The thing that I like MOST about the TV series coming out is that it seems to have lit a fire under Martin and made him realize "****, I really have to get these books done." I'm pretty sure he must have some kind of contractual obligation to have the final book done in time for the final season of the series to begin shooting.

HOWEVER, apparently the main director and producer are the only other two people who know how the story turns out in the end so that they could finish the series without Martin if necessary. He's stated multiple times in his blog that not even his longtime girlfriend/ now wife knows how it ends and that he doesn't discuss the unpublished story with her.

I wish I could do that because I'm now in the "nit-picking" part of the general populace. Little things that are mentioned in the book but are different in the previews already bother me a little bit.

The thing that jumped out at me in the "making of" video was the *spoilers so small they don't even matter* was the Moon Door and how it was positioned/opened in they Eyrie. The Eyrie also didn't seem as cold and antiseptic as I had imagined.

The only thing I'm nit picking at this point is the Hound and the Mountain That Rides aren't going to be correctly sized. But, I guess there is a bit of a shortage of 8 foot tall, 500 pound fighters (for the Mountain).

I'm actually very happy with the casting for both. Rory McCann (the hound) is 6'6" and will stand tall over most other actors on the set. Conan Stevens (the mountain) is a full 7' and will be VERY physically imposing. I'm just glad that they didn't cast shorter actors and "cheat" the shots with visual effects. With actors that size they can cheat just a little and make them look as big or bigger than they were described in the books. They got as close as they could with real actors for a fantasy series that is "larger" than life.

Other than Tyrion, the vast majority of the male characters are over 6'. Then, when you get into the supporting characters it gets really crazy. The Greatjon? The Smalljon? Both 7 footers. Left and right? 7 footers. Hodor? Damn near the Mountain's size and played by an actor that is 7 feet tall.

Robert is supposed to be a very tall man but is played by Addy. That is the biggest discrepancy I've found between the size of a character in the book and the actor playing him.

In short, AGoT has already used up most of the 7' actors around the world.

There have been a slew of reviews already both by folks that have and haven't read the books. Nearly every one of them has been outstanding but I've been mos encouraged that critics who have already read the books are singing it's praises loudest of all.

Now, if you're a retard that doesn't realize that some things in the books just don't translate to TV (i.e. the white walkers being pure white and the Kingsguard armor being pure white for examples) then you will surely find things to nitpick. If you understand that books and TV are vastly different mediums and have to be treated as such, then it looks as though you can appreciate all of the things they did lift directly from the books while understanding that the changes were generally out of necessity and not some desire to change it for the sake of change.

Either way, I haven't been this excited for a new show in....ever.

Me too. I know that sacrifices have to be made. I will 99% guarantee that I am the biggest ASoIaF nerd on this website. Seriously, ask me anything about the books. Do you have questions? Ask me.

I know that TV can never make every person that has read the books happy. I'm just glad that they aren't filming this in the style of "Legend of the Seeker" and ****ting all over the IP.

The Sword of Truth books got pretty ****ty after not too long. I read them for a while and just gave up partway through one a few years ago. Lost all pacing and direction.
