Talking Ever Seen Sludge This Bad?

I pulled the valve covers off the new-to-me 2002 Subaru Impreza TS. Looks like there may have been a few oil changes missed (which probably was the cause of the P.O.'s rod bearing failure)

I got a new shortblock on the way from Outfront Motorsports and just have to clean these heads up.

There was a thread about a BMW that was like that. The owner had never changed the oil, and the car had around 50k on the odo. IRRC, it sill ran too. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: it went 60k w/o an oil or filter change.

I remember that BMW thread. There's a reason I waste my money on fully synthetic oil every 3k or 3 months.

Yup. The motor had an external coolant leak (Head Gaskets) that I'm thinking the leak eventually went internal as well.

I picked up the car with some bad rod bearings for fairly cheap. Ordered my new shortblock and just have to clean up these heads (after I find the head bolts to remove them).

After they're off the block, they'll go through the parts washer to get all that gross oil off.

...i believe he just said parts cleaner... its a wash station with degreaser acid stuff that is harsh enough to clean the skin off your hands. so it'll get the gunk off those heads

anyone else have strange fetishes for fixing things like this?

myself & the mates often buy $100 POS's and fix them up as best we can and endurance race them - last man still standing.

most fun weekend you can possibly have with your pants still on.

Good lord. I think it all comes from people not keeping cars more than a couple of years anymore. They never get to feel the pain of their neglect.
