Car: 1997 Impreza 1.8 coupe, 5sp
Problem: It won't rev above 4200ish rpms. It's almost as if I have launch control on it, but I certainly didn't put it on there. The car's engine/tranny/ecu are bone stock. It's my rallyx beater, so it sits for sometimes months at a time. It started right up with no problems though - didn't even hesitate one bit. It currently throws a misfire code on cylinders 1 and 3, so I will try changing the spark plugs the next chance I get (It lives at the rallyx venue, which is 80 miles from me). But even with a couple of fouled plugs, I didn't think it could cause the redline to lower to 4200 rpms. Anyone else have a similar issue?

The speedo does work, and I'd have to guess it is somewhat accurate. When my VSS died in my civic, the needle would bounce around and then drop to 0, but in the impreza, it still sweeps at a constant rate.

When my speedo sensor went bad the speedo was completely dead...the male "spinny" part of the sensor actually broke causing it to quit registering speed. At this point the car went into a safe mode and did exactly what you are explaining...starts and revs fine but falls on its face at around 4000.
Any codes? It might not be the speedo sensor but it could be a different one that is forcing the ECU to play safe. |

CEL for misfires on 1 and 3, and like I said in the original post, I was going to change the spark plugs next time I go out there.
