Arrow Dealer Says My Aftermarket Intake is to blame....

Just want everyones thoughts on this...

My 2000 RS's alarm siren stopped making noise a few months back. I took it into Carter and they spent a day on it and couldnt figure it out. So i took it to Walker Subaru and they told me my WeaponR intake was causing engine vibrations at higher revs that somehow made the wires to the siren stop working. So they dont want to pay this as a warranty repair and they want me to pay to have the siren rewired.

It seems to me that the intake is nowhere near the stock alarm siren...and the engine vibrates either way stock or aftermarket intake...its a boxer.

Its 50bucks out of my pocket but i bristle when someone says my aftermarket parts caused some failure. Like my STi air valve stem caps caused wheel bearings to fail just kidding


Any thoughts?

I think that is a load of crap.

OK, MAYBE the "vibration" could have caused the failure...but let's get real here...the odds of that...

Whatever...it's a warranty repair, not damage caused by an aftermarket item.

That dealership's repair shop SUCKS.

The whole thing makes me angry...

Sure they could... you know- they could be heavier than stock and throw the whole wheel out of balance ! Being that your siren should be mounted to the engine apron, I don't care how much "extra" vibration an intake makes- the engine mounts would isolate the siren from the engine. Unless the siren was installed with the wires totally taught, there's no way vibration could have caused any problems. Feel free to head over to deniedmywarranty.org and submit your story... I'll probably get sued over that site one of these days, but I'm determined to help a person or two out in the long run anyway !

Yea right...... That fits right up there with some dealerships telling the owners that the backfiring issue can be solved by installing the chrome exhaust cover.

I would ask the mechanic to show proof that mechanical vibration from the air intake caused the failure of a solid state component. I think the problem is that the vibration from repeated useage of impact tool has caused some brain wiring to become damaged.

I'd tell them :monkey:

LMFAO!!! that's the best thing i have EVER heard...i guess they have never watched that siren vibrate with the stock airbox...if it was a bobbing head doll it'd still be bobbing.

My siren just stopped working this week. I thought I somehow got the system into silent mode but its not the case.

Just ask for a written explanation why they are denying you warranty coverage, signed by the service tech and general manager. If you get that, I'd be surprised. Otherwise, if they can't explain it to you in writing, how can they deny warranty coverage. The law states the dealer must prove the aftermarket part caused the defect. Ask for this proof.

That right my man, get everything in writing, signed by the service manager AND the tech who worked on your car stating that your intake is the cause of the siren failure. Watch how fast the back peddle. It happened to a club mate of mine here in hawaii although it wasn't a siren.-Scu

Incredible...

I went in there today to pick up the car...it was washed and they had it running out front with the ac on a few minutes after i arrived at the service counter.

Basically the tech came out and explained that removing the stock airbox made the support for the siren wobble, thus weakening and eventually snapping the wire.

I went in and talked to the service guy and mentioned that i was posting this and the resolution to this on the I-board and that i really wanted to have something positive to say and he said he did too, so no charge.

All in all a good experience

Glad everything worked out but the point is that if it finally got taken care of, they could have just taken care of it in the first place and saved you some aggravation.

Oh man, that almost makes me sick to think that a dealership would even suggest that a CAI could have caused the failure of the siren. Given that, the wiring on the stock alarm siren is quite fragile. I moved mine from the stock location after I installed my CAI and tuged the wire a little too hard and broke it inside the siren housing. I had to take the thing apart and re-solder the wire on the leads which turned out to be a very tedious job but saved me 50-60 bucks!

The wires on my siren crapped out on me too. The wires were cut just outside of the siren housing. I didn't even bother going to the dealer. (Oh how I hate them. ) I just called up my friend, who installs car alarms for a living, and he got me a new siren for $20. All I did was splice and sodder the wires together and that's it. $20 saved me the aggravation of having to deal with the dealer. (Did I mention that I really hate those guys? )
