Default help: car starts then dies, where do i start

car
1998 subaru forester
2.5 phase 1 engine, recently rebuilt for the classic hg (no warranty)
completely stock

i just recently bought the car so this is inconvenient to say the least
its been feeling a little sluggish around town and i assumed i needed to go through everything and make sure maintenance was up to par
yesterday it shuddered coming out of a stop light a couple times, felt like a momentary miss.
Now last night i checked the maf and spark plug wires, applied a little dielectric grease and restarted it, ran fine. Then later that night when i went to start it it would start but as soon as the rpms dropped to around 1k that car would shut off completely. The lights all still work fine so i assume its not a battery or alternator problem.

Thank you for your time and suggestions
Ryan

Check to make sure the big Vacuum hose is still connected to the intake tube, It connect right after the maf on the bottom side of the tube.

Make sure the MAF plug is completely plugged in/has good contact.

Full disclosure, I drive a '99 328i, but my son just got an Impreza with maybe some issues...so I have to post three times to be able to post first thread...am fulfilling that req!

Anyway, the bmws have similar stalling issues at times...many related to air leaks aft of the MAF...in particular, one boot going to the idle control valve frequently cracks...so much air, engine doesn't have enough fuel measured to combust properly...so air leak seems good guess as suggested.

But, the other thing is that we clean our MAFs all the time...so a MAF cleaner...don't touch wires...just spray...be gentle with it you know...and let it dry.

Also, you can 'smoke' the engine to isolate location of possible air leak...spray carb cleaner around and if engine sputters (while running normally, of course) then you've gotten closer.

Finally, my favorite...a 4' hose about 1" in diameter to listen around the engine (if you don't have mech's stethoscope)...can often hear things not sounding right.

Of course, I'm assuming all the rest of car is in okay shape...filters, fluids, etc.

Sorry...should've also said...don't 'assume' it's not battery coz the lights are on.

Cars need a lot more power to run than that powering lights...battery and/or alt could be issue.

Test voltage on bat...s/b about 12V with car off...about 14v with car on...make sure connections are clean and firm...try to pull cables off...they shouldn't come off, of course!

Given the previous symptoms, an air leak sounds like a good place to start looking. Before you start going gung-ho on the testing though, make sure you don't have a security light flashing on the dash or maybe try another key if you have one.

I got ahead of myself one time and got trying to figure out a no start on a Fit. Some cars will start and die others just plain old won't start.

In regards to cleaning the MAF sensor, you have to be careful with that. Some manufacturers (like BMW and MB) have sensors that you can clean, while others will be ruined by any kind of solvent. I have no idea which catergory Subaru falls into.

OOPS UPDATE
Burnout was right, at night i checked my air filter and couldn't see that i disconnected that vaccum hose on the underside of the intake, but i also checked compression, changed spark plugs and the fuel filter while i was in there.
compression at 5 cranks is 180 on all four, im pretty happy about it

Thanks guys
