Default 2008 OB running rough

Hi, I have a stock base level 2008 outback 2.5 automatic. The car has been great to me until having recently returned from a 3000 mile drive. The problem occurs mostly at start up and only intermittently so far. I go to start it cold and the engine sounds/feels like it drops a cylinder. It begins to stutter and vibrates more noticeably. I thought at first maby an engine or trans mount had went south but there is definitely a sputter from the engine accompanied by a loss in power. It hadnt thrown a CEL at me until yesterday. I started it cold again and the problem persisted longer than usual. I drove it for a few miles and during that time it sputtered often and the CEL flashed briefly then went away.
Until then i had only noticed it during the first few seconds of starting the car. It would stumble for a second or two, i would give it a little gas, and the problem seemed to clear itself.
Ive changed my oil in the last 100 miles, and it went in for its 60k service at the dealership just 10k-15k ago. The car has 75k on it.

Im guessing that since it threw a CEL I should just go get it read and find out whats wrong for sure, but does anyone have a clue as to what could be causing this? I imagine its something to do with spark or fuel, most likely a bad plug or something. If so im not in any immediate danger of causing damage while driving it, correct?

Thanks for any advice.

When the CEL comes on and stays on, have it read. Let us know what it is and we'll go from there.

Could be a bad plug, bad wire, vacuum leak, or a host of other things.

The car has about 75K on it, just went in for its 60K a couple months ago.

For what its worth I went for a short drive yesterday and the car ran without an issue. Very confusing....

The code that threw the CEL isnt stored in the ecm?

Just try to get to Autozone or Advance Auto when it's on so you can read to code. If it clears, you can't read it (I think?).

Anyway, if you're getting a flashing CEL like I think you are, that means a misfire, and it does match up to the symptoms you're saying you have. When I had misfires in my old subie, it flashed, but then stayed on and waited for me to clear the code, even after turning it off and on.

Some simple things you can do is just check your plugs and wires. Could be something very simple like that.

Also fill out your profile, you might be lucky and have a subaru guy near you with a code reader, I know that Mine has come in handy a couple times with my friends who didnt feel comfortable driving to autozone with a CEL
