Thumbs up Amsoil Panel Air Filter

Just picked up a lightly-used one of these for my '02 2.5TS as a replacement for the stock filter. Installed last night. Some first impressions:

- There's a lot more to this filter than the stock unit. Totally different construction. Beefy 'looking' metal panel surrounded by foam. The stock filter looks like a Fram. That's not a compliment.

- I am suprised at how much more volume and butt-dyno power there is. Along with my ghetto NESIC hand-me-down CAI, there's now a definite growl from the airbox at WOT that wasn't there before. Feels as tho there's more pull from ~3500rpm, which I didn't expect.

Only negative: Had to take off the stock airbox to get it open enough to install the filter. Not a big deal, just a few extra mosquito-bitten minutes.

My intention was simply to save money over repeated stock air filter replacements. That there's this lovely growl and a touch more butt-dyno pull is great! Money well spent.

Just that.. It's a homemade PVC/rubber deal that I got from Khaos, but it does have a SPT sticker, so it prolly adds 2416hp!! Either way, it's far better than the miles of stock intake mess.

I'm undecided on PDM/Ganz vs. Cobb. So far I'm leaning to the Cobb, but it's more $$ that I can currently justify, hence the ghetto/Amsoil matchup.

I assume that since I already have the Amsoil and would just need a pipe, the PDM (at half the cost) would be a better deal than the Ganz. Or I'll just go used. Will have to research this.

See my review here for a near-identical opinion. I installed my filter facing the same way.

PDM intake pipe seems an excellent deal. Just wait until you swap all that nappy stock intake tubing for a CAI of any flavor.

Default I agree

Wow, It seems to rev faster and be more powerful in the lower band. Hard to believe a stock filter could have been so restrictive with 6000 miles on it. Another important note is that the oiled foam filter seems to damp the intake sounds or not resonate like the stock filter. It is much quieter.

My next mod is the PDM intake.

The Amsoil could be easier to install if it didn't have a foam frame that was very hard to insert into the box. They also give no directions for the way it should face. I have the metal grill facing the front of the engine.

I got mine from Ganz.

Update: I installed the PDM intake and was happy and surprised that the 2002 RS 2.5 has nothing inside the fender well that must be removed. It only took 3 screws to remove the snorkel and series of plastic boxes with a peg that was inserted into a gromet in the fender well. The noise is only louder at full throttle and I think this is because of the damping from the foam filter. It is my opinion that the filter made more performance diff than the intake but I didnt bother resetting the ECU. It sure sounds better and not much louder.
