Default Forrester Stalling problem

hello all!

I have a friend with a 98 Forrester. When she starts the car, the engine goes to about 1500 rpms and then slowly down to 0 and stalls. If she presses on the gas, it drops faster. We have tried cleaning the MAF and replacing her very dirty air filter but that did not. She found a MAF used at a junk yard for $40 and may buy it to see if that helps. Woudl anyone have any other suggestions to what else could be causing the problem? Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Check : Spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil ignition system, exhaust leaks, air intake, Throttle body. That's all I can think of. Have them either replaced or inspected.
