Default Oil change? Engine is knocking when startup *no I did not fully start it*!!!

Alright, was doing an oil change.

Castrol 10W-40.
New oil filter.

pull off old filter, do drain plug and drain oil. nasty nasty deep black color, ugly.

Clean off pan bolt, reapply it. put on oil filter with no oil in it.

Fill it up with a whole 5 quart bottle of 10w-40, made it drink every last drop.

Check oil level 4 times, its at the good range (so happy)

go start car slowly (ready to stop igniton at second) hear knocking, metal on metal CONTACT!

go oh **** oh **** oh ****, let it start only for one turn of the engine.

waited a few minutes more, like 5-10 mins. did it again, one 1st/2nd spin I hear some knocking immediatley turn it off.

take off cars oil filter, filled it up with oil and placed some oil around the metal contact inside the o-ring, hand torqued it.

When i took the filter off; there was really no oil in it, just a dab here and there if that.

Went to start car, let it go for 2-3 rotations, and heard metal on metal contact, turned car off immediatley, and now I'm here; sad.

Never had that happen.

Check engine bay thoroughly. Drain the oil again. Start it, and the moment it's running, floor it for about 5 mins, or till a piston flies out the engine bay. Inspect engine again.

If engine nuked itself, turbo conversion.

Forced upgrades are the best kind of upgrades.

Did that already, even took it on the highway.

Drove it up to 60, it was okay no real noise except when the car turns on (turning over) and when it's at a stop and sudden pressure on the thottle.) and over 4500/5000 RPM.

So in otherwords, its dead. *sigh* I killed a subie, my best friend. D: all in my hands. I did it.

Not that I would recommend it, but putting on a dry filter will not kill your engine. there's enough oil on everything and in the passages for it to idle for two seconds before everything is filled. I hear a lot of times at the dealership they don't even bother priming a new motor.

Damn... Only thing I saw in your process that is unusual was not priming the filter. Not sure what else it could be. Is 10W-40 the standard oil? Did you warm the engine up before draining it? Was your previous grade of oil also 10W-40?

Yes engine was warmed up, and sat for 10 mins before I went to do it. Primed the filter a tiny bit on the top, but didn't fill it.

I've heard allot of blown big end bearings, and not a one sounded like that. That sounds more like something else has broken... Almost soulds like a rod or piston, but it looks like it's running on 4 fine.

Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait and see. Crack it open ol chap! (And stick a dual port 22 in there to replace it)
