Need help-No a/c and car overheats

On my way home today our 2000 Outback started to overheat. For awhile now the a/c hasn't worked right. It only blows cold air when the car is moving. Now the temp gauge goes past normal to 2/3 of the way up the temp scale. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? I have to drive it till my car is done at the body shop later this week and tomorrow and Weds should be 100+ here.

Went back out and ran it without a/c and with a/c for about 3 mins each and the radiator fans never kicked on.

make sure both fans are plugged in and are working.

Is the radiator topped off? Is the coolant overflow bottle filled to the appropriate level?

The fact that the fans didn't kick on when you turned on the A/C is definitely a problem. Check the fuses or relays for the fans.
